Celebrating the Life of Karissa Willette Carr
Missoula Church of the Nazarene, Missoula, Mt., 15 April 2014
Karissa was born in Orlando, Florida on May 21, 1978. She made our family (Bill, Janet, Jeremy and Justin) complete for those beginning years. Early on Karissa made it known that she had a radiant, independent, and adventurous spirit that could charm all that she met. She was a 1996 graduate of Monte Vista High School in Monte Vista, Colorado. She obtained her BS degree in elementary education from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee in 2000 and was currently two classes from completing her Master’s from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Karissa’s teaching career included positions in Nashville, Tennessee, Cheonan City, Korea and currently teaching Language Arts in Washington Elementary in Taichung, Taiwan. She had proven herself to be a very adaptable teacher in different cultures as well as a variety of age levels. Her leaders and the parents she worked with always gave her high praise regarding her teaching skills and love for children.
Karissa’s zest for life expressed itself through her love for reading, cooking, rock climbing, scuba-diving, hiking and back-packing, traveling and experiencing new cultures, as well as a love for her family and meeting new people who quickly became friends. She had a passion for helping others and enjoyed volunteering at an Orphanage in Korea working regularly with five young boys. Karissa enjoyed spending a few years of her life in Missoula, Montana while her husband was doing graduate work at the University. She enjoyed working in the Missoula Nazarene Church as a volunteer children’s pastor organizing their children’s ministry. Karissa learned to embrace and love the many areas that she lived in but Monte Vista, Colorado and Missoula, Montana were perhaps her favorites before her journey took her overseas.
July 31, 2013 was a very exciting day for the Carr and Smith families as Trent and Karissa were married in a small but very special ceremony in Billings, Montana. Karissa’s time with Trent was short but were some of her happiest days. Trent gave her unconditional love and with that came indescribable joy. Trent also provided a source of strength and help as he walked with her during her final three weeks of declining health and her passing on March 23, 2014.
Karissa’s untimely and sudden death leaves her family, Husband Trent Smith of Taichung, Taiwan; Parents Bill and Janet Carr of Billings, Montana; Brothers Jeremy and Roberta Carr of Clarkston, Washington and Justin and Nicole Carr of Kenai, Alaska; Nieces and Nephews: Emma, Devin and Addyson Carr of Kenai, Alaska, Maggie and Sophia Carr of Clarkston, Washington, Gemma and Tobin Smith of Hopkinton, Massachusetts; Parents-in-love Mark and Colleen Smith of Clarion, Pennsylvania; Brother-in-love Trevor and Mandy Smith of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, along with extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins and a host of friends to reflect on the joy of her life and now the sorrow of her short time on earth.
