Nancy J. (Nimmo) Elmer, age 80, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2017, surrounded by her loving family, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wis. She was born May 15, 1937, near Evansville, Wis., to Orvin and Julia (Himle) Nimmo. She was a 1955 graduate of Evansville High School. She married her sweetheart Paul Elmer, Jr. on March 10, 1956, and the family farmed in the Brooklyn area, where they were very active in many farm co-op organizations and dairy promotion activities, until their retirement. Nancy also sang and played drums in her husband’s band, Paul Elmer Jr. and the Music Makers, for many years. They were also avid members of the Madison Packer Backer Club. Their love, friendship and commitment was evident to all those who knew them. Nancy was by Paul’s side, whom she fondly called “Pete,” through many a co-op trip and Packer game. She enjoyed enduring friendships through her position as star catcher on the local women’s softball team for many years, which her husband coached. Many a batter had to endure Nancy behind home plate, trying to rattle them into striking out. Nancy was an avid crafter and enjoyed traveling to area craft shows with her hand-made children’s sweat suits and home crafts. She made many friends on the craft show circuit, and always had a ready smile and helping hand for a fellow crafter. Nancy’s seven grandchildren were the apples of her eye. Her home was a showcase of photos and child’s artwork, and anyone who knew Nancy, knew how much she adored her grandchildren. As they grew, Grandma was still there for them with reassuring words or an embarrassing story from their childhood. Many of life’s problems were solved while playing a game of 3-13. The youngest of 12 siblings, Nancy was the glue that held the Nimmo clan together and her home was the site of many a Nimmo family reunion, where the extended family would come together for a day of reminiscing. She provided care and comfort to several of her older siblings and niece DeAnn Gransee during their struggles with illness and declining years. In her later years, Nancy was a resident of the Evansville Heights, where she served unofficially as social chairman, always ready to join in a game of cards, bingo or dominoes. Just as she had been her entire life, Nancy was there with a ready hand, helping to read Bingo numbers for those struggling or assisting others in holding their cards. Her craft talent continued, as her family looked forward to receiving handmade cards from Grandma at birthdays and holidays.
Left to honor Nancy and remember her love are Nancy’s three daughters; her grandchildren; a loving sister, and many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her parents, Orvin and Julia Nimmo and siblings Merton Nimmo, Marion Burnell, Janet Armstrong, Doris Cagle, Margaret Otto, John Nimmo, James Nimmo, Ralph Nimmo, O. Thomas Nimmo, and Carol Navarra.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Oak Grove Church, 101 W. Church Street, Evansville, Wis. with Reverend Josh Brumbaugh officiating. Burial will follow at Evansville Cemetery (Maple Hill) . A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of service on Saturday at Church. Ward Funeral Home.
