TSCHUDY OR TSCHUDI) name is spelled both ways...common modern version is Tschudy... Following is written by Caroline Tschudy Mosier..
Immediately after their marriage in Switzerland, my Tschudy grand-parents came to America. They stayed for a short time in Peoria, Illinois. Then with their first born son, John, born in 1861, they came to Minnesota about the time of the (great) Sioux uprising. Two more children were born to them. Mary Magdalene, who died at two and my father, the youngest born May 24, 1865.
Grandfather Tschudy did not serve in the Civil War because of his extreme near-sightedness, but his half brother, Casper Knobel served in the Union Army and was one of the group of soldiers who captured Jefferson Davis, for this he received the Congressional Medal of Honor. His home was in Philadelphia. The soldiers divided some of Davis' belongings among themselves as souvenirs, Knobel received a collar.
My father, John Jacob, was born in Maple Grove (Osseo), but most of his early life was spent on the farm his father bought, one and one-half miles from Osseo (Maple Grove). My father lived his entire life in Minnesota and watched Minneapolis grow from a small city. He was fond of telling us of the horse-cars, the old suspension bridge, the dime museum, and the brewery (Glueck's) "way up in the woods".
