    • Herbert Richard Alvin, 89, was born April 5, 1925, in Billings. Herb passed away on April 23, 2014 while doing one of his favorite things — fishing!

He was preceded in death by his parents Carl Sr. and Mary Jane, and brother Carl Jr. Alvin. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 53 years Laura Alvin and sister Delores Hurr and her husband William and is adored by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Herb graduated from Colstrip High School in 1943 and was a basketball star, wearing jersey #7.

Herb was a decorated WWII veteran, serving his country as an aviation cadet, gunner and photo recon specialist for the Army Air Force. He saw numerous battles in the South Pacific and was decorated with four combat stars. At war’s end Cpl. Herbert Alvin was nominated to attend West Point by Sen. Burton K. Wheeler. Herb recently traveled to Washington, D.C. with the first Honor Flight from Montana.

In 1961 Herb married the love of his life, Laura Gallaty. They enjoyed 53 years of adventures together.

After his service to his country, Herb returned to Billings and worked for the Engineering Department of the Northern Pacific Railway, Foley Brothers in Colstrip and helped design and build the huge coal mining shovels. In 1954 Herb joined Phillips Petroleum in the Land Department until 1965. Herb then joined the City of Billings engineering division, drafting the city’s infrastructure maps. The maps that Herb produced are still being used today by almost all of the city utilities and planning departments. Herb retired from the City of Billings in 1988 but remained active, working part time updating the county bridge department’s maps.

Herb was an avid hunter and excellent fisherman, which he enjoyed up until his last day. Herb and wife Laura enjoyed a lifetime worth of fishing and hunting trips together. Anyone who ever knew Herb loved his ability to tell fabulous stories of all his life’s adventures.

Herb was a life member of the DAV and a member of American Legion.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 1, at 10 a.m. at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary with interment in Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park. A reception will follow at the Elks Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be given to the Rosebud County Museum in Forsyth or the Colstrip School House Museum or a charity of your choice.
