GEORGE KNOBEL, there is not always sunshine in our sou and especially not when one of the old settlers of Milton Township has laid down his pilgrim-staff, refusing to march with us any longer.
George Knobel was born February 56, 1843 in Bettschwanden, Glarus, Switzerland. He came to America in 1864 making his home in the state of Wisconsin and came to Berne, Minnesota a year later in 1865.
On August 11, 1870 Mr. Knobel was joined in marriage to Miss Anna Zeller. They made their home on the farm which Mrs. Knobel homesteaded, one mile north of Berne where he and his wife were obliged to cope with the trials and difficulties of the pioneer life.
Mr. Knobel was a member of the German Reformed Church at Berne for many years. Being zealous to place his family financially in good circumstances he labored till his strength failed. Two years ago he made a trip to Europe to see his native land and visit the old home were his cradel stood seventy years ago. Ever since he returned from this trip his health seemed to fail, and the last two weeks of his life he was confined to the bed, having great difficulty in breathing caused by the hardening of the muscles of his heart. His condition grew worse from day to day until the night of October 29, 1913 his heart failed to perform its functions and caused his death at eleven o'clock.
He leaves to mourn his death four daughters, one son, three grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
