These are the moments which proof to me that I am enjoying the right hobby. Lara from time to time asks me to help her finding especially links to the US descendants of our Glarus emigrants. Your case was a bit complicated and I had to involve another distant relatives of Marie E. Romer with whom I also discussed the possibility of Joseph Romer being the father of Marie E. Romer. Since the her death certificate indicates that the name of her father was Joseph Romer it was relatively clear that we had only to check the parish books of Amden, Benken and Schänis (all villages with Romer families) to find a possible match. And Joseph Romer (1823-1863) who married Maria Magdalena Hösli (1828-1904) was the only match which I was able to find in these 3 parish books. But the final proof was your DNA test results since they clearly indicated that the Hösli and the Michel families are related to Marie E. Romer. You will find all of them in the family tree.
My possible story for Marie E. is the following:
Katharina Maria Romer, born 20.5.1855 in Glarus as the fourth of seven children to Joseph Romer and Maria Magdalena Romer née Hösli, worked as a tailor in Zurich. Could be that she got pregnant out of wedlock, decided to emigrate to America (since at that time it was still a shame to have an illegitimate child). On the cross-atlantic ship she met John Davis, who worked on trans-Atlantic passenger ships (this was proven by 6 trans-Atlantic trips which mentioned him as a ship employee - information provided by the relative who helped me on the US side), felt in love and married him after arriving in New York.
Could be a possible story didn’t it?
I have been dealing with the families from Glarus for many years and I am searching especially for the descendants of the emigrants from Glarus who left the country mainly in the middle of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. Due to these years of research I was able to build up a database with more than 220'000 persons. This allows me on the one hand to show the emigration history of the Glarus emigrants and on the other hand to prove the roots of their descendants.
I was also able to trace yourself based on US sources. As a result I provide you with your pedigree showing 15 generations of persons which I have in my database. Your father is Frank Carson Kempf (1917-1988) and your mother Grace Hannah Wells (1921-1994). Your pedigree goes back to the beginnings of the church records in the canton (state) of Glarus (about 16th century). I would be very pleased if you could give me more information of missing data if you would like to do so.
