Mrs. Jacob Marty, 89, well known Monroe residen and great great grandmother, died Tuesday afternoon in her home, 1914 16th avenue, of old age complications. She had been in ill health since June, 1942.
The funeral services are to be conducted at 2:30 Friday afternoon in the Shriner-Neushwander Funeral home by Rev. Paul C. Kehle, pastor of St. John's Evangelical church. Burial is to be in Greenwood cemetery.
The former Maria Altman was born May 16, 1855, in Canton Glarus, Switzerland, the daughter of Samuel and Rosina Altman Altman. She was married there on May 3, 1877, coming to Monroe with her husband in August of 1880. Mr. Marty was a prominent builder and contractor in the city, having constructed and planned many of the city's fine homes. They lived always in Monroe and for the past 41 years Mrs. Marty had resided in the present home. Mr. Marty died in April, 1920.
She was a member of the Women's Order of G. U. G. Germania and attended St. John's church. Possessing a keen mind, Mrs. Marty retained interest in current events through the long months of her illness, and continued to take pride in the many beautiful flowers which surrounded her home each summer.
Surviving are three sons, Jacob C., Fred B. and Ernest, all of Monroe; three daughters, Mrs. Jacob Lewis, Orangeville; and Mrs. Laverne Deal and Mrs. Howard O. Schulz, Monroe. Mrs. Marty had 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. Of the grandsons two are in the armed forces; Cpl. Lloyd F. Marty, serving with the First army in Germany; and Howard F. Schulz, T/M 2/c, at Pearl Harbor.
Two sons are deceased; David in 1942 and Samuel in 1916. Three daughters have also passed away, Mrs. Emma Danwidde in 1933, Mrs. Fred Steinman in 1942 and Verana in infancy. Mrs. Marty was preceded also by a half sister, Mrs. Minnie Streiff, and by five half brothers, David, Marcus, Joseph, Adain and Samuel Baumgartner. [courtesy of Audrey Quinn Porter]
