Fred Thoman, 68, Dies Unexpectedly After Short Illness Summoned at Home West Of Monticello: Rites Conducted
Funeral services for Fred Thoman, 68 years of age, for 40 years a resident of the United States, who died at 4 o’clock Friday afternoon in his home in Washington township, about seven miles west of Monticello, were conducted at 1 Monday afternoon in the home and at 2 in the Washington township Reformed church. Heart trouble proved fatal. He had been ill only a short time.
Rev. A. Muehlmeier, pastor of the Washington and Monticello Reformed churches, officiated. Interment was in the Washington township cemetery. Pallbearers were John Loertscher, Otto Theiler, Ed. Gempeler, Charles R. Marty, Albert Weissmiller, and Christ Yaussi, all neighbors of the deceased.
A native of Switzerland, Mr. Thoman was born in Spiez, Canton Bern, Oct. 3, 1867, the son of Rudolph and Magdalena Mutzenberg Thoman. In the year 1892 he came to America, returning to Switzerland again in 1896. While on his visit back to his native land, Mr. Thoman was married to Susanna Grossen in Spiez March 12, 1897. The same year they came to this country and subsequently settled on a farm in Washington township, which has been their home since.
Survivors, besides the widow, are six children, Wilma, Ernest and Robert, at home; Arthur, Monroe; Mrs. Will Bidlingmaier, Monroe, and Walter, Monticello, and two brothers, Gottfried Thoman, Exeter township, and a brother living in Switzerland. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Mr.. Thoman had long been known as a capable and industrious farmer and had always enjoyed the acquaintance of a large circle of friends. He was a member of the Reformed church.
