Jean Pierre Grieder

maybe someone can help me with this i found this post of my cousins on line and he has apparently gotten further on the tree than the rest of us and is not sharing his findings can anyone help me with this ??

"I am descended from Hans Jakob Grieder from Rünenberg and Barbara Pfeiffer from nearby Hafelfingen, Baselland, Switzerland, both of which are near Gelterkinden, such that all these towns attended the same church in Kilchberg. I have been unable to trace back my Grieders over the border to nearby Baden Württemberg, Germany, but it appears possible, even probable, that my line is somehow related to this Martin Grieder from Fahrnau am Wiese. My Hans Jakob Grieder immigrated to America and became "Joggi" Crider in Cabarrus Co, NC. David Crider..

information for greiders/grieders /criders

Beitrag von angie hampt » Mi 14. Dez 2011, 18:18

my friend posted this several years ago
To all of you who are interested in Hans Jacob Grieder/Greiter/Greider who immigrated in 1736 on the ship Princess Augusta/Augustus, with his 3rd wife, Barbara Christen, and two older boys, Marti, born 1717, and Fred/Fridlin, born 1719, I have some shocking news that I'm surprised has not surfaced before in regard to John Marsh's 1985 article found in v.8 of the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage Magazine which so many people like to use as a reference.

Background: John Marsh's article is a brilliant attempt to disentangle the GREITERS/KREIDERS from other Grieders/Griders/Gryders/Criders/Cryders (pick a spelling!)--an argument that has raged for over 80 years now, in part perpetrated by the Greiter/Kreider study group of 1929-1934. In his actual body of work, John Marsh did a good job in using source documents. However, he made a fatal mistake in regard to the North Carolina Griders in his early assumptions of this work--at least, that's what it looks like when one actually checks John Marsh's work, and goes to his cited sources.

John Marsh claimed that Albert FAUST, in his work in Swiss immigrants, stated that Joggie Grieder was a quiet farmer in North Carolina and his wife reported his death and the deaths of two older children in 1754. Well, there was a Joggie Grieder in North Carolina.....

however, John Marsh tried to associate THESE DEATHS AND GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION (which actually belong to a Hans Jacob GRIEDER who was married to Barbara PFEIFFER--see below) to the Hans Jacob GRIEDER and Marti and Fridlin who immigrated in 1736 on the Princess Augustus.

Herein lies what appears to be the significant error! The Joggie Greider who died somewhere in North Carolina--probably near/in Mecklenberg County was this person: Hans Jacob GRIEDER, husband of Barbara PFEIFFER! This Hans Jacob GRIEDER also hailed from Ruhenberg. However, his wife was NOT Barbara CHRISTEN, it was Barb PFEIFFER and her father was Hans Jacob PFEIFFER, and he had had a brother who had immigrated some time before to SOUTH Carolina and who had done quite well for himself. Albert Faust SPECIFICALLY STATED UNDER THE ENTRY FOR GRIEDER AND PFEIFFER, i.e., that the Hans Jacob GRIEDER, who was the husband of Barbara PFEIFFER, was the Joggie Grider who was a quiet farmer in NC and whose wife reported his death in 1754. See these pages in Faust's book: 142, 144, 189, and you will see the exact data I have posted.

Normally, this kind of an error wouldn't mean much, and I'm sure it DOESN'T mean much to the Ittlingen GREITER/KREIDERS. However, to those GRIDERS/GRYDERS/CRIDERS/CRYDERS of PA, VA, NC, etc., this was a critical mistake! We could have searched for the rest of our genealogical days, if we had kept the mindset of Joggie GRIEDER who immigrated in 1736 as going directly to North Carolina.

In trying to assess how this happened, i.e., that John Marsh would jump from one Hans Jacob GRIEDER to another, the only thing I can come up with is this: they were both from Ruhnenberg/Runenberg. Unfortunately, in checking with Swiss genealogists, I found out that the name in Switzerland was a little like trying to uncover a list of dozens of "John Smiths" in any place in America, i.e., it was a very, very common name, and villages, especially in places like Basel, etc., were riddled with this name.

What does this discovery mean?

1) It means that those of us who think the 1736 GRIEDER males are "ours" no longer have to work under the assumption that the 55 yo Joggie who landed in 1736 died as a farmer in NC...which goes completely against what the Griders from our side and "the famous Henry" side show for births places of his grandchildren, etc.

2) It means that those GREDERS/CRATERS and some CRIDERS/KRIDERS of north-to-south central North Carolina now have a new lead: Check for PFEIFFER/PHIFER connections. Look in OLD Rowan, Mecklenberg, even as far north as Surry Counties.

(For my own genealogy, my current assumption/hypothesis is this: The Frederick/Fridlin, b. 1715, and the Martin, b. 1717, who came on the Prin. Aug. with their 55 yo father, may possibly end up to be the ancestors of:

1) Martin, b. 1717: the GRIDERS who stayed in Virginia until going to TN and KY, i.e., the famous Henry Grider who married a Smith, and his brother, Jacob who married Rebecca Henton/Hinton, and who may have had brothers named John, Martin, etc. AND,

2) that Frederick/Fridlin, b. 1715, is the ancestor of at least some of our Burke County, NC, GRIDERS/CRIDERS (not including the Rowan county Criders)/GRYDERS, such as John Grider/m. Isabel Blair; Valentine, Jacob/m. E. Rippetoe, etc.

This, of course, all has to be proven, but is makes a lot more sense than some of the genealogies I've read out there, e.g., all of the different Martins from various families I see us attached to like the one that claims our ancestor is a Martin, no birthdate, but when checked, he was born in about 1762, etc., as well as a dearth of other Martins born anywhere from 1706 to 1742.

Both GRIDER branches are rife with vague, unproven ancestors, including linkages to the Itllingen GREITERS--even though none of that is provable, and some researchers have even ignored stated ages/birth dates of some of the Ittlingen GREITERS versus this Hans Jacob GRIEDER of 1736, explicity listed as age 55 (b. 1681).

I suppose it could end up to be true that some of us or all of us concerned with this issue end up to be Ittlingen GREITERS, but there are still many immigrants and areas to check in VA, PA, MD, SC first, before assuming that this Hans Jacob GRIEDER was in any close way related to:

Hans and Anna GREITER, who imm. shortly after their nephews, Michael GREITER/GRUETTER/GRITTOR and his next youngest brother, H. Jacob GREITER, with these three comprising the earliest known GREITER immigrants documented for this particular area of Lancaster.

I found three Jacobs in that part of NC. Each of them spelled their names various ways in various documents. But it works out well to designate them thus:
Jacob Grider lived in Burke Co, NC and I assume from what you wrote that he is your ancestor.
Jacob Krider lived in Salisbury, Rowan Co NC and is the son of Barnabas Krider who was born in Lancaster PA. Barnabas was one of several brothers who came to Rowan Co and became a prominent family. In the original editions of The Descendents of Daniel Crider, Sr (published by The House of Crider, of which I am current Editor and Historian) it was assumed by my predecessors that this Jacob Krider was the same as Jacob Crider, Jr., son of our ancestor. This was based on many assumptions that seemed reasonable at the time, but have been proven false by the well-documented research of Jo Linn White.
Jacob Crider, Sr. - my ancestor - and had a life-long association with the Martin Pfeiffer/Phifer family. He was the witness on many land transactions the Phifers engaged in, and apparently lived on the Phifer Cold Water plantation. Much to our loss, the Phifer family records were all destroyed in a fire, and the church records of the church they attended are also lost. There is also a Sally Kreider Misenheimer in the area who was likely (not proven) Jacob's sister. The Phifer family settled in Mecklenberg Co, NC, and were instrumental in forming Cabarrus Co from part of it. George Washington and Governor Tryon both visited in their home. Their prominence in the area for over 100 years is well documented. My Jacob Crider Sr. died in 1809, so my current speculation is that he was the son of the "quiet farmer" Joggie Greider and his wife Barb Pfeiffer. This might make Martin Pfeiffer/Phifer his first cousin, explaining their lifelong relationship.
The primary result of my trip last summer was a conviction that to find the Mecklenburg/Cabarrus Criders, I will need to research the Pfeiffer/Phifers.
