Ganster of Fischbach

Beitrag von kaygee68 » Di 29. Apr 2014, 15:03

Does anyone know the parents of Peter Ganster, born 1803 in Fischbach, married Christina Lippert on June 17, 1827 is Sailauf, and emigrated to Reading, Pennsylvania, USA in 1857 with his family? He apparently owned his own foundry and moved to America for his retirement. He died Nov. 10, 1857 in Reading. His children were quite prominent hotel owners, businessman, and inventors and some of his descendants live in Reading to this day.

I am trying to place him in my family tree but cannot do so without his parents or grandparents. I believe he may be the son of Johann Georg Ganster and his second wife Margaretha Graus. They had a son Franz Joseph, born 1796 in Weiler (Aschaffenberg), who also married a Lippert in Sailauf in 1826. He and Peter may have been brothers who married Lippert sisters.

Any help is appreciated!

Kevin,

according to familysearch Franz Joseph's baptism took place in Ottweiler. Thus he most likely was not born near Aschaffenburg:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJ6Y-MYN

But at the same place a Peter Ganster was born in 1802. However, he had other parents: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NZ48-VVC

Anita, thanks for your response.

A fellow researcher on Ancestry.com forwarded me information from the church books of Keilberg, Waldaschaff, and Sailauf showing that Franz Joseph Ganster was born in Weiler, Ascaffenberg on March 18, 1796. I can't account for the discrepancy with the familysearch.com information. German geography gives me a headache :-).

The researcher also found the information that Peter Ganster was born in Fischbach on March 28, 1803 and married Christina Lippert on June 27, 1827 in Sailauf. Christina was the daughter of Johann Adam Lippert and Eva Maria Kunkel. No information on Peter's parents was found.

I've been working on this mystery for some time. Very frustrating!

Hey Kevin,

please let us go back to that infos in your ancestor-tree, which are really sure.

For the beginning, forget the infos, you have received from your friend about Lippert and Sailauf.

I have found a Peter GANSTER *28.3.1803 in the near of Fischbach (there are a lot of Fischbach in Germany), but this is in the southwest of Germany and Sailauf is in the middle of Germany, 200 kms away. It's not impossible, that your friend could be right, but for the beginning:

who is your last sure ancestor? All what you know about him without the infos of your friend.

GANSTER or LIPPERT
Peter GANSTER ?? which birthday or year??

please only sure dates!!

Georg:

Thanks for your response. This is all I know for absolute certain about Peter Ganster, all according to U.S. records. He was born in 1803 according to the passenger list of the ship he came over to America on. His headstone says 1803-1857 and the cemetery record says he was born in 1803 and died on Nov. 10, 1857. In that same record, his wife was identified as "Christina Libert."

Peter died before being recorded in the 1860 census, but his wife Christina is listed in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. I know from a descendant of his that his son Joseph A.F. Ganster was born in Laufach, just a couple of miles from Sailauf. I also know another one of his sons (Christopher) was very active in the Bavarian Society in Reading, PA.

Peter Ganster was also the subject of a brief biographical sketch in The Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County, Pennsylvania, which says he was born in Bavaria and was an expert iron forger in Germany where he owned his own foundry. This book is not 100% reliable so take it with a grain of salt.

Finally, several Gansters in my family tree also emigrated to Reading. One of them was listed as living in the house of Peter's daughter in 1870.

I am 99.9% certain Peter is related to me but I cannot identify his parents that would help me place him in my tree. Signs point to Johann Georg Ganster and Margaretha Graus. Does your source list his parents? If so, please share!

Hey Kevin,

1. Sorry, I can't give you an ultimate result for your ancestor
Peter GANSTER *1803 +10.11.1857 USA oo Christine LIPPERT out of Sailauf/near Aschaffenburg (D)
with children:
Joseph A.F. Ganster * Laufach
Christopher Ganster

Lippert you can find a lot of (also yours), GANSTER none:
in Laufach
http://de.geneanet.org/individus/search ... ge_size=10
in Sailauf
http://de.geneanet.org/individus/search ... ge_size=10

"Peter Ganster was was born in Bavaria"
That's a little problem because in the german history Palatina (in the southwest of Germany) was a dominion of Bavaria (in the southeast of Germany). So you can find the expression 'bavarian' also in the ancestor-lists of Palatina.
In Palatina and the country beside (Saarland) there are many GANSTERS (look at the answer of animei).

Not in Sailauf and not in the "bavarian" Palatina I could find a couple GANSTER/LIPPERT and so I cannot confirm the parents of the couple above.

2. Peter GANSTER in "bavarian" Palatina:

a) *27.6.1802 Geislautern/Volklingen +6.8.1875 oo Catharina WEISS
son of Jacob G. *1768 +1814 oo Maria Cath. HOLTZER +1782 +1851
---------------------
b) *4.3.1802 Ottweiler oo ?? (look at the answer of animei)
son of Franz Joseph Caspar G. *1766 Brebach ooMagdalena Barbara HENTZIG (HENSIG)
---------------------
c) *28.3.1803 that's your Peter GANSTER above (but I cannot confirm the marriage with Ch. LIPPERT!!!!)
son of
Georg G. *9.5.1752 Neunkircher Eisenwerk +?? oo27.1.1795 Ottweiler Margarethe (STRAUSS GRAUSS) KRAUS(S) *4.8.1770 Schiffweiler

I have found the couple in the 'Reg. rk church-book of Fischbach/Dahn (Palatina) S.38' and the inhabitants of Ottweiler/Saar (look at appendix GANSTER)

Peter was born in "Saarbach" near Fischbach/Dahn/Pirmasens (Palatina)
(look at
http://www.geneal-forum.fr/phpbb/phpBB3 ... f83b95a9e9
Peters ancestors you can find in the appendix (Ganster2)
a lot of the ancestors work as iron forgers most of them in the foundry Halberg in Brebach/Saar.

Last: the marriage Peter GANSTER / Christine LIPPERT is not sure (for me)
You can get help in this question perhaps here:

If you are successful please post it here.

Georg, you've done it! You've solved the mystery of Peter Ganster and placed him in my family tree! Thank you!

All the signs pointed to Johann Georg Ganster and Margaretha Graus being his parents and you have confirmed it with clear evidence. I can not thank you enough. :D

I have no reason to doubt the information provided to me from the local church books recording the marriage of Peter Ganster and Christina Lippert -- the birth dates, marriage date, and location conform exactly. I will circle back with my contact and see if he can provide a photo of the entry. I will also follow-up with Willi Diener as you suggested.

Thanks also to Petra who provided the information about Anna Maria Beer before I had a chance to.

My direct lineage is:

Robert Ganster (1660 - 1726)
Joseph Ganster (1690 - 1770)
Johann Philipp Ganster (1722 - 1799)
Christian Ganster (1749 - 1787)
Johann Peter Ganster (1786 - 1856)
Peter Ganster (1816 - 1892) (emigrated from Buprich, Germany to Baltimore, MD about 1853)
Nicholas C. Ganster (1843 - 1914)
Harry Walter Ganster (1866 - 1944)
Harry Walter Ganster Jr (1890 - 1928)
Harry Walter Ganster III (1915 - 1970)
John Matthew Ganster (1943 - )
Me (1968 - )

Peter's family was prominent and influential in Reading, PA for decades -- hoteliers, businessman, and inventors. I am visiting the area next week. Some of his descendants still live in the city and surrounding areas.

I'd be happy to share my Ancestry.com family tree with you if you are interested.

Again, many thanks!

Great question! Yes, she did. I have her given name as Anna Catharina. She appears in the 1860 census as "Annie C." (10 years old); in the 1870 census as "Catherine" (20 years old). Then the trail grows cold. There is a listing in the Baltimore City Directory for "Mrs. Catherine Ganster" running a small grocery store at the exact same address where her mother ran a store before her death in 1875. No mention in records of her marrying or dying. And nothing in the Baltimore Sun newspaper, either. She is also a mystery.

And to answer your other question about other children of Peter and Anna. They had 7 total:

1. Peter Ganster, born in Nov. 28, 1840 in Buprich (and then no other mention of him after that)
2. Stillborn in 1841
3. Nicholas C. Ganster, born (birth record lists him as "Nuobert"), Feb. 4, 1843 in Buprich
4. Stillborn in 1845 in Buprich
5. Stillborn in 1847 in Buprich
6. Stillborn in 1848 in Buprich
7. Anna Catharina, born March 4, 1859 in Buprich.

I can give a full accounting of Nicholas and all of his descendants if you have any questions.

Peter Ganster died Jan. 15, 1892 in Baltimore. Anna died June 8, 1875 in Baltimore. Peter appeared to marry a second time to Sophia Miller. The Baltimore records are terrible.

Nicholas was married twice. First to Sarah Jane Bullard (1846-1887) on May 17, 1864 in Ohio County, West Virginia and then to Ella Loretta Clarkson (1854-1932) in Baltimore on Oct. 13, 1887. Nicholas had 6 children with Sarah (J.P., Harry Walter, Edgar N., Laura May, Anna M., and Georgianna Loretta) and 3 with Ella (May P., Nicholas C. Ganster, Jr., and Ella).

Nicholas died Sept. 1, 1914 in Baltimore.

Regarding Peter Ganster's siblings ...

I was not aware of Michael Ganster until you passed along the information. I had not begun to focus on this particular family until I started suspecting Peter was a part of it.

In addition to the four children Johann Georg Ganster had with Anna Maria Beer (Johannes, Nicholas, Anna Karolina, and Elisabeth), I am aware of 5 children he had with Margaretha Graus:

1. Franz Joseph, born March 18, 1796 in Nuenkirchen. Married Anna Maria Lippert on Oct. 30, 1826 in Sailuaf.

a. Barbara, who married Georg Flekenstein on Aug. 19, 1845 in Schonau. They had three children: Christian (1846), Maria Eva (1849), and David
(1852).

2. Anna Margaretha, born Dec. 24, 1797. Married Jacob Breiner June 1, 1841, in Fischbach bei Dahn.

3. Peter Ganster

4. Michael Ganster (no know nothing additional about him yet)

5. Maria Elisabetha, born in 1808. This is where it gets confusing! Maria Elisabetha was married to the Georg Fleckenstein mentioned above first. Georg and Maria Elisabetha had three children (Heinrich Joseph, 1837; Conrad, 1841; and Georg 1844-1844) before Maria Elisabetha died in late 1844. Georg Fleckentsein then married his dead wife's niece, Barbara. At least, that's how I read it!

I'm quite certain none of the above wound up in Baltimore. It appears my direct line were the only Gansters to settle there. The great majority of the rest ended up in Pennsylvania.

I'll let you know if I discover any other details. Thanks.

Hi Kevin,
one more remark.
I looked at your list and found some of your Ganster in Völklingen-Geislautern. The grandfather of the Heinrich (St.Ingbert) also is a member of the Geislautern family. The mentioned Anna Margaretha Jochum is a member of the Jochum family of Großrosseln, town next to Geislautern.

Willi W.:

I overlooked Elisabeth Ganster Kessler. I have her in my tree. According to the 1900 census, she arrived in America in 1865. She lived in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA. She died 31.10.1909 in Duquesne, Allegheny County, PA. She had 11 children. Happy to share more if you are interested.
