Februar 1836 an Heitenreid, Kanton Fribourg geboren.

English summary below
Hallo Gaylynn,
Feb. 1836 in Heitenried FR geboren.
Hello Gaylynn,
who gave you the information that you have to be at the office in person to get a "Familienschein"? I am not familiar with the situation in canton Fribourg, but have requested and received these documents in several other cantons - always by either letter or mail.
You mention that Jean Thalmann was born in Heitenried (which is not a place of citizenship for Thalmann - see Occurences Thalmann in Switzerland) and citizen of both Fribourg and Tavel/Tafers: is there proof of this double citizenship - or is it just unknown whether he was citizen of either Fribourg or Tavel? It would be best to check the Heitenried church records for information on the citizenship of his parents, or the marriage entry in Giffers; unfortunately neither of these records have not been filmed by LDS - so they have to be checked at the Fribourg state archives.
I don't find Aily (or similar) in the Swiss surname register - could be a French family. Jungo (not Yungo), however, hold citizenship in several communities of canton Fribourg. This is also true for Schaller, which is a fairly widespread name, especially in the German speaking part of Switzerland (and other German speaking areas).
Finally another question: who emigrated to America - and when?
A response in English is fine: I'll translate to German, or at least provide an abstract.

Thalmann im Kanton Fribourg
Deutsche Zusammenfassung im nächsten Beitrag
Hello Wolf,
Thank you for all your help as we try to get more information about our family roots in Switzerland.
I'll start with your last question - who emigrated to America and when? My maternal grandfather, Joseph Ralph Thalmann, emigrated through Ellis Island to America with his Aunt and Uncle, Marie and Otto Schirmer, in 1921. He was born in Berne, May 8, 1903 to Rosalie Thalmann, who was not married at the time. So his grandparents, Ulrich and Maria Philomena Thalmann Jungo, who lived in Fribourg, adopted him and cared for him until their deaths, when different aunts and uncles began caring for him.
Grandpa Joe wrote a personal history, which I typed. It is in this personal history that I have any knowledge of his family. I will insert here his own version of where his family came from.
"The area around Heitenreid, Canton Fribourg, lies close to Canton Berne. It is an isolated area in the Prealps. At the bottom of that hill in the Galtera was the home of my grandparents, Ulrich and Maria Philomena Thalmann Jungo. Ulrich, the son of Jean Thalmann (citizen of Fribourg and Tavel in Switzerland) and Madeleine Aily, was born February 17, 1836 at Heitenreid, Canton Fribourg. He married Maria, born February 21, 1838, daughter of Christopher Jungo and Marie Schaller, on February 22, 1856 at Giffers, Canton Fribourg, and then settled down on a farm in Tentlingen, Canton Fribourg. Ulrich and Maria had six children: Alphonse, Laurent, Joseph, Jean Joseph, Rosalie, and Marie. Most of their six children were born on their farm."
Grandpa Joe loved his grandparents for taking care of him, but felt so embarrassed at being illegitimate. It was not until his final years that he told his children that his mother was not married when he was born. He gives a name of his father, but never knew that man. His mother eventually married and had other children. His mother, Rosalie Thalmann, married a man who my grandfather only identifies as Bruilhart.
When his grandparents died, Grandpa Joe was taken in by an Aunt Pauline and her husband, Emile Bavard. This is another confusing part of his history, because in listing the children of Ulrich and Maria Thalmann, there is no Pauline. Was Pauline an "aunt" in name only, or did he just forget to add her to the list of children in the family?
I would love to have the real dates of birth and death and correct names for Ulrich, Maria, and all their children. Thank you for making this thread possible and for your help. Let me know if you would like any further details. For example, Ulrich served in the Swiss Mercenary regiment in the defense of the Pope (1868-70) into Italy, at least according to my grandfather's history.

Mai 1950 in Fribourg.
Feb 1836 in Heitenried FR geboren.
oo 22. Feb 1856 in Giffers FR [korrekt: 25. Nov 1861 in Marly FR]

oo
53 Madeleine Aily [korrekte Namensschreibweise: Aeby]
54 Christopher Jungo [von Fribourg und Tafers]

Anmerkungen:
Zuerst sollte also beim Zivilstandsamt in Tafers/Tavel nachgefragt werden.
2. Bzgl.

Hallo Gaylynn,
I have provided an abstract of your posting in a somewhat structured format (using the Kekule numbering system).
Comments:
1. Not being sure whether "citizenship Fribourg and Tavel" actually means double citizenship, or Fribourg is just indicating the canton, I will first contact the Civil Registry Office in Tavel and ask whether your ancestors can be identified on their register. It would be helpful to have some additional info first (see below).
2. If Ulrich served "Schweizer Garde" 1868-1870, he was fairly old already (32) and married - which, if he actually did serve, might indicate a senior position (usually only singles are admitted, at least nowadays).
3. Would you know (from the context) whether "Bruilhart" was a surname or first name? More likely a surname, I guess - then Brulhart might be the correct spelling - have been citizens of Montécu, Oberried and Praroman (all canton Fribourg) since before 1800.
Questions:
1. Have you got any other dates, like dob and dod of Rosalie Thalmann? When did her parents die? Any vital data on her grandparents?
2. I checked Ellis Island and found the record of the ship Vauban, sailing from La Plata (Argentine) on 13 Dec 1920 and arriving at New York on 03 Jan 1921. The record mentions Santa Fe (Argentine) as last residence: is this also mentioned in Joseph's personal history text?

Thank you so much for helping again, Wolf.
To answer your questions, I do not have any dates for Rosalie Thalmann. My grandfather lists her parents' births and deaths.
Father: Ulrich Thalmann born February 17, 1836 at Heitenried, Canton Fribourg died in Citizen's Hospital in Fribourg, September 7 1911? -gives other years in his record also.
Mother: Maria Philomena Jungo born January or February? 21, 1838, place? died March 4, 1911 or 1912? Relying on my grandpa's record
place: Fribourg
Maria Jungo and Ulrich Thalmann married February 22, 1856 at Giffers, Canton Fribourg.
Joseph Thalmann lists his great-grandparents names, as we have them above in the thread, but no dates. I am interested finding all these dates.
To answer your second question, in his history, Joseph Thalmann writes of landing at Buenos Aires in 1919 and mostly living and working in Puerto Borghi. He says Santa Fe was the nearest big town, where they sometimes walked on Sundays. He writes "We bought passage on the British liner SS Vanban Layort Holt and sailed from Buenos Aires on December 16, 1920." He writes that he arrived in New York Harbor on January 12, 1921 and describes going through Ellis Island the next morning, the 13th.
Going back to Joseph Thalmann's stepfather, I find a letter to Joseph from a lawyer, Hartman & Dreyer, notifying him and his relatives of a stepsister's death. Joseph's relatives are listed as Madam Jacqueline Bruhlhart Bovey (Joseph's stepsister's daughter) and Mademoiselle Cecile Bruhlhart (don't know where she fits in), and the sister who died was Mademoiselle Emilie Brulhart, who died on 8 May 1982. From her name and death date, can we find the full name and dob and dod for her father, Brulhart and mother Rosalie Thalmann? I would also like the vital dates for these relatives if we can find them. Thank you again for your help.

Hallo Gaylynn

1. Response from Civil Registry Office: I did get a fast response - but just stating that their register doesn't go sufficiently far back to answer the question.
2. Above posting by Gerlinde Telley: Gerlinde has checked the church registers at the State Archive, and found (and photographed) several entries relating to your Thalmann family. She'll come back to you as soon as she has sorted things out.

Thalmann von Fribourg FR
Below I add a few comments on Gerlinde's above posting, followed by an English abstract of her posting. The most important additional information has also been added in red to the summary further up.
1. Heitenried and Hauteville are two different communities. This was my (Wolf's) mistake: I had copied that incorrectly from somewhere; has been corrected in the above postings now.
2. It is possible for Swiss citizens to have several places of citizenship. This is correct - the question was, whether it's the case with this family - see next item.
3. According to the marriage record Thalmann were citizens of Fribourg (only - which explains the negative response from Tafers); Jungo were citizens of Fribourg and Tafers (which likely caused the confusion).
4. According to a census list of 1852 Thalmann were (in canton Friburg) citizens of Fribourg, Plaffeien, St.Antoni, Bösingen. Comparison with Familiennamenbuch indicates that the lines of Bösingen and St.Antoni are extinct today.
5. According to a census list of 1888 Thalmann were (in canton Fribourg) citizens of Fribourg, Plaffeien, St.Ursen. The "Stersmühle" is owned by a Hostettler family.
6. The Thalmann-Jungo family lives on the "Stersmühle" (Mühle = mill) in Tentlingen. According to the 1920 census Tentlingen was a hamlet of 8 houses with 11 households and 54 inhabitants. You'll find a (modern) image of the hamlet on tentlingen.ch.
7. Marriage record: 25 Nov 1861 in Marly (which differs from your info - see summary further up):
Ulrich Thalmann, born Heitenried 17 Feb 1836 as son of Jean and Magdalena Aeby (note her maiden name) and
Maria Philomena Jungo, born 21 Jan (not Feb) 1838 as daughter of Christopher and Marie Schaller.
8. They had 13 children, 5 dying in childhood: Maria Anna 1862 dies in childhood, Wilhelm 1863-1889, Christoph Alphons 1865, Johann Joseph 1867, Laurentius 1868, Paulina 1870, Jakob Ludwig1872-1876, Maria Rosalia 1873, Joseph 1876, Theodor 1878-1878, Seraphina 1879-1879, Mauritius 1880-1882, Maria 1882.
9. Gerlinde offers to check the death dates, possibly also the newspaper death notices. She has acces to the archives of the cantonal and university library of Fribourg.
