1. Ehe 1846 mit Maria Luise Mylius (1824-1862) von Frankfurt: Kinder
- Albert Nikolaus (1847) Kaufmann in Mailand
- Laura Elisabeth (1853) oo Louis Gaspard Albert Dollfuss in Lugano
- Johann Heinrich (1854-1913) Fabrikbesitzer in Wien
- Ellen Luise (1857)
2. Ehe 1866 mit Sophie Kesselring (1840) von Märstetten TG: Kinder
- Luise Sophie (1869) oo Piero Gallo Calcedonio Gaspero Capponi in Florenz
- Emma Frida (1872) ooI Ugo della Gherardesca in Florenz, ooII Marchese Alessandro Bartolini-Salimbeni in Florenz
- Dora Elisabeth (1876) ooII Angelo Ritatore in Mailand
- Olga Lucia (1878)

Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz / Dictionnaire historique de la Suisse / Historical Dictionary of Switzerland:
- Vonwiller (Familie)
- Vonwiller David 1794-1856: Begründer der Baumwoll-Industrie in Süd-Italien.
- Vonwiller Karl Paul 1885-1962: Dr.med.&phil. an der Universität Zürich
- Vonwiller Ulrich 1735-1808: u.a.

Vonwiller 76 Conrad (1662-1719)

Post by Wolf » Mon 9. Mar 2015, 15:29

Dort taucht u.a. ein Konrad Vonwiller (? St.Gallen - nach 1667) auf ... siehe Anhang.

---------------------------

Vonwiller 177 Laurenz (1759-1825) Vorfahren

Post by Wolf » Sun 22. Apr 2018, 09:34

The following sequence has been extracted from Stemmatologia Sangallensis. As mentioned above, the earliest generations (ancestors of Niclaus, Nr.13) are under discussion: data given in Stemmatologia will be a good starting point, but should not be taken for granted.

The numbers in front of the names are the numbers used in Stemmatologia. The document has been digitized and should become freely accessible online in May 2018: I will post the link once this is the case. Stemmatologia gives full families for each head of a family - see example above.

...... ooI 19.06.1790 Maria Anna Desuliers (31.06.1761-13.05.1797)

Thank you Wolf. This is very helpful. Laurenz VonWiller was a very interesting man in the early history of Grenada. I am struggling to transcribe his will due to the difficult script it was written in, and the fading over the years. He was married twice in Grenada and had a few children. It is said that he wrote a book on his involvement in the French revolt against British rule in Grenada that I am trying to get a hold of. I am not certain if he sent it to St Gallen after he was tried by the British for his part in the French Rebellion on the island, or it is lost forever. This is why I am hoping to make contact with any serving relative that might know something about this, and might be able to lead me to a place where that book might be stored.

Stemmatologia list only a single sister for Georg Ludwig: Johanna Clara, born 03.03.1791. Would you know of any other siblings - who were not reported to St.Gallen?

Hello Wolf. Most of the documents I am looking at are written in French. The island was a French colony at the time. I cannot read French that well, so I am struggling to clearly understand what is written there. Maybe you can do a better job. I see lots of names but it's not too clear to me how they are related. The one with the most information is a Marriage agreement written in 1817 between Laurenz Vonwiller and Marie Magdalene Faure La Chapelle - Benoit (Bennoit). I am missing information on the children of George Ludwig Vonwiller.
1833 Andreas
1834 Louisa Maria Anna
I have baptism for Gerog Heinrich and Franz Adolf.

Laurenz Vonwiller got married twice, 1790 and 1797 - did he get married a third time in 1817 - or is the date 1797 for the second marriage incorrect - or was this his will? Unfortunately my French is insufficient to read this text.

The short text on Jean Claire Vonwiller seems to list two deeds from Claire Camille Desoulie to Jean Claire and George Louis Vonweiller. My interpretation would be that Claire Camille Desoulie is Maria Anna's sister, likely unmarried or at least without children of her own, bequeathing her nice and nephew.

Wolf, the story I am looking to clarify involving Laurenz Vonwiller (b. Oct 5,1759 – d. Oct 1,1825), claims that he came to Grenada sometime in 1789 – 1790, to try and bring back profitability to three estates purchased in Grenada by two Swiss Johann Jakob Thurneysen and Jacques-Louis Pourtalès in 1770.

The details can be read here:

Koloniale Erfahrungen im letzten Drittel des 18. Jahrhunderts : die Plantagen der Firmen. Thurneysen aus Basel und Pourtalès aus. Neuenburg auf der westindischen Insel. Grenada. Autor(en):. Röthlin, Niklaus. Objekttyp: Article. Zeitschrift: Basler Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Altertumskunde.
https://www.e-periodica.ch/cntmng?pid=b ... 91:91::421
https://www.google.com/search?q=Kolonia ... =947&dpr=1

In 1770 two Swiss from Basel Switzerland: Johann Jakob Thurneysen Sr. (1729-1784), and Jacques-Louis Pourtalès (1722-1814) financed the purchase four plantations in Grenada. (One Coffee and three Sugar). After the Fedon rebellion, Pourtales sold the plantations to an Englishman in 1797.

Both Swiss gave up their Swiss citizenship for British citizenship, and became powerful members of the British ‘Planters Club’.

Laurenz Vonwiller loved Grenada and was culturally more at home with the French Creoles on the island, and when they revolted against British rule in 1795, he became an agent of the French Creole Rebels, and supported their struggle. After the rebellion was crushed by the British, Laurenz was tried for treason and imprisoned from 1798 – 1800. For reasons still unclear to many local historians, he was pardoned and released while hundreds of his French Creole comrades were hung. He attempted to go back to St Gallen with his wife and was refused entry – based on what is written in his will. He returned to Grenada and died there in 1825.

It looks like he got marred just before he was charged with treason and jailed. The marriage agreement might have been written after his pardoned, and might have been filed in 1817 in the Registrar of the government office in Grenada. (That is still under investigation).

As I mentioned at the start of my post on here. It is said that Laurenz wrote a book of some kind of his involvement in the French Rebellion in Grenada, and I would like to know if there are any family of his - still around in St. Gallen Switzerland, who might know something about this! If, in fact, this story is true.

.............................no male descendants mentioned 1887

Conclusions:
1) No information on what happened to Laurenz' grandsons.
2) Descendants of his brother Christof (1766-1809) have moved to Australia. No information on this line after 1950, i.e. either there were no male descendants or there was just no further contact with St.Gallen.
3) To find relatives living in Switzerland today, one would have to go back at least one more generation.

Thanks Wolf and Nico - this was all very helpful to me.

I have one question for Wolf. You wrote the below earlier where you mentioned a daughter of Georg Ludwig Vonwiller born 1834 named Louise Maria Anna. Where can I get more information on her? Was this birth registration sent to St. Gallen, Switzerland? Any information on the possibility of accessing that information Online would be much appreciated.

Thanks

My only source is "Stemmatologia", the list of citizens of St.Gallen:
Vonwiller-197b-Georg-Ludwig.jpg
Obviously this information came to St.Gallen - but how?

Baptisms abroad are occasionally listed in the St.Gallen baptismal register: in these cases the baptism was reproted to St.Gallen "officially" and was announced in the church. This would then usually give an exact date, not just a year. So I didn't really expect information in the St.Gallen baptismal register - but have checked the years in question: nothing :(.

If the father died in 1835 in Trinidad: could the two younger children be born (1833 & 1834) in Trinidad?

It is said that he [Laurenz Vonwiller] wrote a book on his involvement in the French revolt against British rule in Grenada that I am trying to get a hold of. I am not certain if he sent it to St Gallen after he was tried by the British for his part in the French Rebellion on the island, or it is lost forever.

He attempted to go back to St. Gallen with his wife and was refused entry - based on what is written in his will. He returned to Grenada and died there in 1825.
I had enquired at the St.Gallen City Archive: very helpful people there!

The only mention of Laurenz Vonwiller in the "Ratsprotokolle" (minutes of the magistrate's meetings) date 1792/4 and are related to his wife's citizenship (I'll have a look at this later). It would be useful to know the exact wording in his will: did he want to return prior to the uprising - or afterwards (in which case the mention in St.Gallen would be too early)?

After that there seems not to have been any direct contact between Vonwiller and the city administration. This afternoon I spent a couple of hours reading the "Missiven" (letters sent to the city administration) of 1798 (just as an example what to expect there): only letters from other administrations or reports from city representatives in other regions. I then stopped checking as the chances to find a private letter there have to be considered negligible.

So there is no indication that he had given up his citizenship - or was deprived of it. Also his son and grandchildren are still listed as citizens. Consequently there was no reason why he would have been denied return to St.Gallen by the city administration. How the family felt about him (an imprisoned revolutionary?) returning is a different matter: they could have told him to stay where he was. This is pure speculation, of course - which is why the exact wording in his will would be interesting.

Thank you Wolf for the copy of the doc. I know a little about what happened to Louisa Maria Anna. I am still looking into what happened to George Henry, Francis Adolphus, and Andreas. As you mentioned - and I agreed, Louisa Maria Anna and Andreas might have been born in Trinidad - not Grenada, which would explain why they are not in the births and Baptism records in Grenada.

I am working daily on trying to transcribe the pages of Laurenz Vonwiller's Will. Every day I am able to clear up a few more words. I will eventually get it all transcribed, and I will post it then.

This is what the pages look like:

Based on some of the records in Grenada and Trinidad that I am looking at, there seems to have been descendants of [George Ludwig (Louis) Vonwiller (b.Oct 27, 1793 - d.1835 Trinidad) -M- Oct 28,1823 Gabrelle d'Ey in Grenada] and Gabrelle d’Ey. I am still in the process of putting the pieces together.

• 1824 George Henry (Georg Heinrich) (b.Nov 30,1824 Grenada - d.1901 in Trinidad?)
• 1827 Francis Adolphus (Franz Adolf) (b.Mar 18,1827 Grenada - d.1901?)
• 1833 Andreas (b.1833 Trinidad - d.?) Male name? Andrew or Andy?
• 1834 Louise Maria Anna (b.1834 Trinidad - d.186X Grenada)

Just to avoid confusion: the information I gave above was "dead 1901", not "died 1901", i.e. died before 1901 ... unless the contact with the family was just lost before 1901, but family members were still alive nevertheless.

So there seem to be indeed further descendants, not reported back to St.Gallen.
