Siehe den folgenden Beitrag für eine Zusammenfassung auf Deutsch.

Hello, I am trying to research my Kopp family line from Switzerland. This is what I know about my Swiss family:

I have managed to trace my great great grandmother Elisabeth Zumbach's family back in Switzerland, all the way back to the 1500's, however her husband (my great great grandfather) I have not been able to learn much of anything about. Thus far, I have checked with Canton Bern, Canton Luzern, Canton Thurgau, Canton Aarau, I have not yet checked in St. Gallen. My great great grandfather, name is Josef (Joseph) Kopp (I am unsure of a middle name, though once it looked like he put "S" as a first letter of a middle name.) his date of birth is supposedly January 7th 1864. Josef gave three different dates as to which he immigrated to the states; 1875, 1883, 1884 on the census records. His Religion was Catholic. My great great grandfather Josef married my great great grandmother Elisabeth Zumbach (who was a Protestant woman who was from Belp, canton Berne, Switzerland) after immigration to the USA. Elisabeth Zumbach was previously married to a man named Johann Gerber, who was also from Switzerland. Elisabeth who was also called "Eliza" may have married John or Johann Gerber in Switzerland, but after coming to America, Johann abandoned Elisabeth and their baby daughter, and that's when Elisabeth and Josef married in Ohio in the United States. Josef and Elisabeth went on to have seven children togther, one of which is my great grandpa. I was able to find Elisabeth and her family through familysearch.com Josef I have not been able to find out anything about. Unfortunately I cannot find a record being specific about where he was born or lived when in Switzerland.

As you notice, there were a few times my relatives were listed as being from Germany, this likely an error due to possibly a neighbor answering for my family because they were not home at the time of the census, or whatever the circumstance. I found Josef Kopp's obituary in the newspaper of 1949, and it said he was a "Native of Switzerland". Also, I did find a DNA match on ancestry whose name was Mark Kopp. Mark matched my father and I and a few others from this specfic Joseph and Elizabeth Kopp line. This leads me to believe his ancestors were related somehow to my Josef Kopp. He mentioned his Kopp line is from Luzern - although a preliminary research in Luzern didn't find anything for my Josef Kopp.

I cannot trace my grandpa back to Switzerland with any immigration records, and I cannot find out who is parents or relatives were. Any help would be appreciated.

Zusammenfassung des vorstehenden Beitrags:

Jessschuck sucht Angaben (z.B.

MIG tells me, based on Lütisburg church records, more exactly the records of external marriages:
There is only one distant possibility for a "suitable" Joseph Kopp of Lütisburg:
Josef Anton Kopp, a tailor of Lütisburg, married in Bern on 09 Dec 1837 Anna Lüthi (most likely of Rüderswil BE). Children are not mentioned - but if baptised in Bern, this may just not have been reported to Lütisburg. So IF(!) the Joseph of the present research was actually from Lütisburg, Josef Anton and Anna could have been his parents - though this doesn't seem to be very likely, some 27 years after getting married.

Interesting! I want to share what I saw in the family tree of my "DNA" match (this person who has the surname "Kopp" and biologically related to me and others from our Kopp family line). This cousin match I discovered on Ancestry is named Mark Kopp. Mark says that his grandfather is Samuel Wilber Kopp, and his great grandfather was Jacob Peter Kopp II who was born 3 APR 1859, in Lucern, Switzerland, and his great great grandfather was Jacob Peter Kopp I, born 20 May 1838 in Switzerland.
Now, Jacob Peter Kopp II, immigrated from Switzerland and arrived in the USA 1 Jun 1881. He lived in Tuscarawas county Ohio... which is the exact county my Josef Kopp (born 1864) lived in as well. I'm sure they were family. Cousins? I do not know.

Mark Kopp is coming up as a 4th cousin to my father. Josef Kopp is my father's great grandfather. 4th cousins share great great great grandparents... this means that whoever Jacop Kopp I's father is would be my josef's grandfather....
