Baldegger von Jonschwil SG
In the family tree for my wife there is someone called Jacob Anton Baldegger. In the census records for England he was put down as coming from Switzerland and that he was born about 1854. He was married in London on 11th July 1878.
I couldn't find any records of him in Switzerland or of his travelling to England.
However, thanks to some kind people in Switzerland an entry for him was found in the records for Jonschwil, St.Gallen, Switzerland along with his ancestry.
The details are as follows:-
• Citizen register from Jonschwil, vol. A (or I), Nr. 7a: Johann Baptist Baldegger (15/09/1805 – 23/07/1877) and his wife Margeritta Keller (16/04/1816 – 12/07/1896) with their children Johann Baptist jun., Joseph Anton, Maria Catharina, Carolina Barbara(?), Maria Elisabeth, Maria Margeritta, Karolina, Jacob Anton (born 16/10/1853, married in London 11/07/1878) and Karl.
• Citizen register from Jonschwil, vol. A (or I), Nr. 5d: father of Johann Baptist Baldegger (15/09/1805 – 23/07/1877): Jakob Baldegger (02/04/1767 – 24/10/1846) and his wife Maria Anna Schwarz (12/11/1765 – 28/12/1822) with their children Joseph, Jakob Anton, Martin Sebastian and Johann Baptist Baldegger (15/09/1805 – 23/07/1877).
• Citizen register from Jonschwil, vol. A (or I), Nr. 5a: father of Jakob Baldegger (02/04/1767 – 24/10/1846): Johann Jakob Baldegger (? - ?) and his wife Elisabeth Brunnschwiler (? – ?) with their children Anna, Mauritz, Jakob Baldegger (02/04/1767 – 24/10/1846) and Joseph.
Is there anyone from the St Gallen area of Switzerland who would be willing to help me with further research?

Re: Baldegger von Jonschwil SG
Hello
Maybe I can help you with your research, if you are still looking for information.
I am a direct descendant of this line of the Baldegger-Family. My family has records back to 1767. Since then we are mentioned in Jonschwil.
It is supposed, that the Baldegger-Clan is related to the central-swiss town of "Baldegg" where there was a family of wealthy mercenaries. (this would exlpain the family-crest with the halberds)
I am happy to assist you with further questions.
Désirée Baldegger

Thank you for posting a reply. Have you got any photographs, stories or anything else about anyone on this line? Do you know when Jacob Anton Baldegger emigrated to England? What were his circumstances at the time? Why did he emigrate? What was his religion? Do you know anything about Eugenia Praszka, the lady he married on 11th July 1878 in London? All I know about her was that she was Polish and had a father called Stephen Peter Praszka and that he was a school master at the time of the marriage.

Re: Baldegger von Jonschwil SG
Hi, you contacted us a while ago and we didn't maintain contact. My name is Nicola Baldegger, my husband is Paul and children Laurence 17, Gabriel 11 and Reuben 8 are also related to your family. James and Ann Baldegger are the parents of Paul.
Should you have any family history you could share we would love to hear. We visited the town of Baldegg and the Baldegger lake in 1998 and are intrigued captivated by the possible history however with a young family haven't found time to research ourselves.
We thought we were the only Baldegger family in the UK.
Many thanks
Nicola

Re: Baldegger von Jonschwil SG
Hi Nicola
Thank you for your message. Somehow the last one never reached me (usually you get a reminder form geneal-forum when there is a new message - maybe it ended up in my spam-box)
Anyway, I am glad to hear from you, because there is further information I can share with you.
For instance i have an analysis of a linguist about the exact meaning of the name "Baldegger", some photographs of the hamlet where all Baldeggers from Jonschwil must come from.
I'd love to share them with you - do you have an eMail adress? It would be easier to communicate that way.
Maybe you've already noticed: i looked you up on Facebook
Kind regards
Désirée

Please, keep in mind that mail addresses should not be posted to the forum (spam prevention) - use PM (personal message) to exchange mail addresses, whenever "direct" communication makes sense.Desi87 hat geschrieben:I'd love to share them with you - do you have an eMail adress?

Great, I've sent my contact email via messages on Facebook. We would love to find out all about the history, origin and see the coat of arms. To see if it matches one that was given to my father in law many years ago.Desi87 hat geschrieben:Oh and I nearly forgot:

Re: Baldegger von Jonschwil SG
Der älteste Eintrag im Jonschwiler Taufbuch zur Familie Baldegger von Oberrindal betrifft die Taufe von Josef Baldegger am 23. Mai 1667.
Adam Balteger

Oktober 1666 in Jonschwil geheiratet.
(Ich hatte diesen Eintrag übersehen und nicht in meiner Datenbank) Ich lese:
17 Octobris contraxerunt Matrimonium Adam Baldeger et Maria
Hefenbergeri de Laubenau.. (?) paranymphus fuit Conradus
Hugendobler
Kann jemand den Herkunftsort entziffern?
