Neubruch / Neugereut / Neugesetz / Neusatz

Beitrag von Jerry Flook » Do 23. Jul 2015, 01:13

The document Verkauf der Feste Neuberg am Bodensee 1451 contains the following wording:
der Nuesatz von Muller; der Nuesatz von Uolrich Keller; das Nuesatzli von Fluck; der Nuesatz von Riethelm Velwer

What is the meaning of "Nuesatz" or "Nuesatzli"?

I don't know - but let me try a guess 8-).

Important: if you don' know an expression - don't ask for just the expression - look at the context:

"..., der Muller gibt vom Blumenhuser Weingarten ... Weingarten ...Weingarten ... Weingarten ... Weingarten ... Weingarten ... Nuesatz ... Nuesatz ... Nuesatzli ... Nuesatz ... Weingarten ...". This part of the text is a listing of tiths, and it is grouped in types of lands held. Nuesatz (with Nuesatzli being the diminutive) is grouped together with Weingarten (vineyard). So my guess would be it combines "nue" (= neu /new) with "gesetzt" (planted): a newly planted vineyard, which does not give any harvest yet.

I hope, someone more knowledgeable can confirm this - or come up with a correct explanation .

Wolf,

Once again thanks for your insight into the possible meaning of "Nuesatz." I had noted that the terminology appeared in a series of names of vineyards and suspected that it had some relationship to wine growing. Somewhere I found a definition of "satz" meaning a term used in the Middle Ages for a mixed planting of both red and white wine grapes. The "nue" prefix would not have confused me had it been "neu." Your theory sounds reasonable to me.

Danke

Jerry
