Hirket in Ermatingen TG

Beitrag von foldbjerg » Di 14. Aug 2012, 09:24

I wonder if anyone can help me in my search for informations of my Schwizz great-great grandmother or if it is possible for me as a dane to look into the archives in Scwitzerland.

My great-great grandmothers name was Maria Katharina Hirket born 25.11.1825 in Ermatingen, Thurgau. In her first marriage she was married to Leonhard Ilg or Gilg and they got a daugther Maria Catharina born 1.7.1846 in Salenstein, Thurgau. I don´t know what happened to Leonhard but my great-great grandfather Ulrich Nielsen got married to her and they got a son (my great grandfather) born 13.10.1851 in Steilborn, Ermatingen, Thurgau, also named Ulrich Nielsen. The family went to Denmark where Maria Catharina (my great-great grandmothers first child) married a dane - Peter Dinesen Bech. My great-great parents lived and died in Hjørring, Denmark, but my great grandfather went to USA with his wife and two sons but my greath grandparents died there when my grandfather and his brother were very young and the two sons returned to Denmark and were raised by Maria Catharina and Peter Dinesen Bech.
I hope anyone can help me further on.
Kind regards

What is your source for the name "Hirket" - as this name doesn't show up in the Register of Swiss Surnames. One possible explanation would be that she (or rather her parents) just lived in Ermatingen, but were not Swiss citizens ... another explanation could be a reading or writing error. To follow this up, I recommend to check the original baptismal entry: Ermatingen church records have been filmed by the Mormons, and with the date known it should not be difficult to find the entry.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I have got the informations I gave in my letter from Family Search, but there my great-great grandmother is mentioned as Katharina Hirket, her husband as Leonhard Ilg and their daugther as Maria Catharina.
But in the danish registers their names are Maria Katharina Herbert and Leonhard Gilg and therefore I can´t say which is the right spelling, as I can´t see the original Schwiss church books. In Denmark is is possible to see the chuch books on the net up till 1960.
I have made a mistake with the name of my great great grandfather. His name was Mathæus Nielsen and not Ulrich Nielsen, which is the name of his son and of his grandson(my grand father).
Would you be to kind to tell me, if I have any other posibilities to find further informations of my great-great grandmother and her family?
Kind regards

Well - the data compiled in FamilySearch are of widely varying quality - to word it politely . If I had to place a bet, this would certainly by on Herbert - a quite common name in German speaking countries, and since before 1800 citizens of Niederhelfenschwil (St.Gallen). It is impossible, however, to choose between Ilg and Gilg - both are valid Swiss surnames with several citizenships in canton Thurgau (Gilg also in Aargau).

As mentioned before: Ermatingen church records have been filmed by the Mormons - so you would be able to view them in one of their Family History Centres: is there one in your area?

Possibly ask her to send you a print (off the film) or scan of the print - which then could be uploaded here, for people to read themselfes.

Best practice for you would be to ask the Staatsarchiv Thurgau. May be, they could give you a plausible answer to all your questions, because they have the microfilms of all Parish books of the canton Thurgau, too.
