I believe my ancestors are from Switzerland based on careful review of census data; but, I am missing one or two generations to link in.

This is the family I believe I descend from?

Father: Johannes Hans STEINER (born 1673 Roethenbach)
Mother: Anna BRENNEMAN (born after 1690 Weuzbrunnen, Roethenbach)

Sons who immigrated to Pennsylvania, USA:
1. Christian STEINER – immigrated about 1717 AD
2. Jacob STEINER – brothers 2-6 immigrated about 1720 AD
3. Abraham STEINER
4. John STEINER
5. Henry STEINER
6. Rudolph STEINER

I have heard several rumors:
1. The STEINERs were originally Jewish, and converted at some unknown time in the past.
2. This family was in Bavaria before going to Switzerland.

Does anyone know about this family?

Hi Yvonne,

first of all - there are two Röthenbach in canton Bern - im Emmental and bei Herzogenbuchsee.

Steiner is a very(!) common name in all German speaking parts of Europe - so they could well have come to Switzerland from Bavaria, or (much less likely) could have been Jewish - but they also could have been a long-established Swiss line. Better not to rely on rumors, but on known facts only.

Brenneman is not a Swiss name - you likely want to look for Brönnimann.

There is no Weuzbrunnen: Google seems to find it only in American genealogy resources - so this looks like a reading error which is being copied over and over again. There is a pilgrimage church named Würzbrunnen in Röthenbach im Emmental - likely what you are looking for, and the reason why I assume Hans Steiner to be born in Röthenbach im Emmental (rather than the other one).

married Christina ROHRBACH, born 1607 Oberland, Switzerland, and died in Diemtigtal, Bern, Switzerland

The oral tradition in the family is that my ancestors fled Roman Catholic persecution in Switzerland and went to Hessen, Germany. They stayed there for 3 years, then immigrated to America.

About 1730 AD, Johannes Hans STEINER (born 1673 Roethenbach, Switzerland), and his wife Anna BRONNIMAN (born after 1690 Reothenbach), immigrated to America.
