Turrian à canton de Vaud

Hello All,
I am researching the family of Elise TURRIAN born in c. 1864 in Montreux. Elise's fathers' name was Vincent TURRIAN and he worked as a Tanner.

Elise moved to England and in 1891 she was working as a female servant in North Moels Southport. In 1895 she married Earl Maurice AUGUSTUS in Lancashire. They had only one child a daughter also named Elise born in 1897.

Elise (mother) died in 1926 in England and her daughter Elise died in 1938. She never married.

I would be happy to hear from anyone who can tell me about the TURRIAN family from Montreux.

Turrian are originally from Chateau-d'Oex (canton Waadt), mentioned first in 1436. 1735 a member of the family became a citizen of Chavannes-de-Bogis (Waadt). Later on, some Turrian-families (from Chateau d'Oex) got the citizenship in other Swiss cities, so in Biel (Bern) 1878, Chancy (Geneva) 1929, Geneva 1861, Presinge (Geneva) 1958. But there were no citizens at Montreux in the 19th century. Being that Montreux is pretty close to Chateau d'Oex, these Turrican might have come from there.

Thank you very much for your information on the TURRIAN family. I will see if I can do some research in these other areas especially Chateau-d'Oex and I may be lucky enough to find something more about them.

Hello Narelle,
Your ancestor Elise TURRIAN was born ca 1864 in Montreux. The family was probably living there but had the citizenship in another village of the Canton de Vaud.
Next time I go to the Archives cantonales vaudoises I will try to find the exact birth date of your ancestor and if possible more information but please be a bit patient.

Thankyou for your assistance. I would really appreciate any help you can give regarding the TURRIAN family as there are very few of them in England in the late 1800's.
If I find any more out about the family I will let you know in case it helps find them.

Hello Narelle,
Your TURRIAN have the citizenship in Châteaux-d'Oex in the Canton de Vaud but lived in Grandchamps which now belongs to Montreux. I found the following information in the Montreux files, ED85/4, p. 159, no 475: TURRIAN Elise, born 20 March 1863 à 5 pm in Grandchamp/Montreux, daughter of Vincent David TURRIAN and is wife Jeanne Françoise Louise Laure born FORNEY. Elise was christened (protestant) on 10 May 1863 in the chapel of the famous castle Chillon. Her godfather/mother are Vincent TURRIAN (probably an uncle) and Elise DELEY.

Hello CYD,
So many thanks for finding this information. There is no way I could have found it without your help. It is interesting that Elise's father and godfather have the first name Vincent. Did Switzerland have a naming system in this era? I wonder if the patriarch of the family was named Vincent?

If I wanted to purchase Elise's birth certificate, how would I do that from outside the country and which organisation would I contact?

Hello,
You cannot purchase a copy of the birth certificate but it is possible to obtain a photostate copy of the certificate or have a photo of it. I do not have a special camera but if you can a little patient I will certainly find somebody who will do it.
Concerning the godfather I have seen that there was another Turrian family living in Montreux. One was called Jules Vincent Turrian he had many children. I suppose he was either a brother or a cousin of Elise's father. I will have a look next time I go to the Archives cantonales vaudoises but please again be patient.
