Translation assistance - hereditary fief
Hello all and thank you for all of the previous assistance. We again find ourselves in need of assistance. As verbal history passed down tells of the family managing a manor, large farm or number of smaller farms (for grape growing and wine production) a division was created in the family when an inheritance, of a hereditary fief, had been disputed.
We hope the information in these documents will hold a wealth of information for our family and their history.
The suits/cases involved 4 different Schilli "tribes" from Zunsweier, Oberkirch, Fessenbach.
If anyone might be so generous to help us translate these documents we would be greatly appreciative.

Any information which may point to help ping to tell our family story would be appreciated beyond belief.
Thank you all in advance.

Re: Translation assistance - hereditary fief
trying to access the links you provide turns out error message 503 Service Unavailable No server is available to handle this request. The first one works, listing various docs concerning Erblehen.
In my understanding, fief usually referred to what nobles rewarded their officials with, while Erblehen was rather a long-term lease contract that was passed on over generations. My guess only, the records report quarrels the Schills had with their landlords, or among the decendents about claims that had been granted when the Erblehen had originally been contracted.
To squeeze all pages of the records would probably turn out numerous name-sakes, and best case clarify relationships. Hope you find a very enthusistic forum member to take the challenge, but it looks like a lot of work to do ...

Thank you very much for your response. I too realize it's quite a bit much however the anticipation and excitement of the possible amount of information contained therein is substantial.
Thank you again - I really appreciate your insight.

This may have been a temporary problem - links worked for me just now - but it is hundreds(!) of pages.hhg hat geschrieben: Sa 14. Jun 2025, 10:56 trying to access the links you provide turns out error message 503 Service Unavailable No server is available to handle this request.

Re: Translation assistance - hereditary fief
on Wolf's comment, I gave it a try at https://www2.landesarchiv-bw.de/ofs21/b ... he=&logik=
The link did work, and it looks like it would be worth to dig further, as there's a lead back to 1668, given on scan3. In brief:
31. Oct 1821, Oberamt Offenburg is instructed to inform the entitled heirs, namely brothers Joseph, Ferdinand, Johann Schilly at Zunsweier, that by the decision of highest Minister of State, they should produce the following deeds in order to receive their shares of Michael Schili's legacy
1) dated 1668 AD for Matheus Schilly
2) dated 10. Jul 1696 for Georg and Lorenz Schilly
3) dated 12. Apr 1728 for Matheus and Lorenz Schilly
4) dated 16. Oct 1744 for the above
5) dated 1. Apr 1769, allegedly for the name-sake sons
6) dated 23. Mar 1792 for Jacob and Michael Schilly
plus a proof of their relationship to the deceased Michael Schilly
So you have an eldest known ancestor - whether yours, or for the Zunsweier Schilly branch only.
Zunsweier Standesbücher are online, so one could try to find Joseph, Ferdinand and Johann, likely sons of Michael Schilly, who obviously died not long before October 1821.
As for the other records, you should try to get into deciphering yourself, unless you don't mind to pay a professional ...

Re: Translation assistance - hereditary fief
Thank you - I apologize, I'm aware. Figured I'd have to at least try to give it a shot, hold out with some hope. Something I think this world could use a bit of now.
If you don't at least try - you have no chance of succeeding. Hope to learn just something that will help.
Thank you again.
