Hutchinson and Pape

Beitrag von Narelle » Mi 3. Sep 2025, 04:36

Hello,
I am assisting a friend who is looking for his great grandparents William HUTCHINSON b. 1814 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England and his wife Amelie/Amelia PAPE b. 1827 Hanover, Germany. Their son Thomas was born at Arttest/Artest, Germany in 1848.
William had moved to Germany in his early 20s and was working there as a boiler maker.

We are trying to find out where Arttest/Artest was in Germany in the 1800s and where William and Amelia were married in Germany.
Any assistance is greatly apreciated as we have exhausted all records available to us on the internet.

Kind regards
Narelle

hope you may get a better answer, this is just throwing thoughts:
Unless you have a solid source (other than the 1871 Census of Gorton, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... B1?lang=de), I'd suspect that the given place of birth Arttest Co (B S), Germany is mistaken. "B S" probably stands for British Subject", but Artest/Arttest does not sound like some location in Germany.

Odd, too: Son Thomas was born 1848, but what seems to be the marriage of his parents (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... KF?lang=de), it took place on 15 Mar 1850 in York, Yorkshire, England.

Possibly a helpful lead, birth record of Marianne Louise Dorothea Hutchinson in 1850:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... e&groupId=
Blumenthal. Taufen 1827–1852, scan 351/1322
[1850] # 18 William Hutchinson, Fabrikarbeiter und Häusling zu Ronnebeck und seine Ehefrau Amalie geb. Pape eine Tochter, geb. 11. Februar, getauft 2. März, genannt Marianne Louise Dorothea. Gev: Hinrich und Dorothea Pape, Maria ?..?
Father William Hutchinson is factory worker and resident at Rönnebeck (near Bremen). Testemonies Hinrich and Dorothea Pape maybe Amalie's parents?

As to Hanover, the birthlace you have for Amalie (Pape) Hutchinson: Most likely, this is not the name-sake city of Hannover, rather refers to the Kindom Hanover, which exsisted 1814 to 1866 and covered a larger area in Northern Germany. Interestingly, for a period, under rulership of the king of Britain.

All in all, guess it takes more puzzle-pieces to consider, to get a clear picture for the family. Good luck!
