In September 2007 I went with my Aunt to Switzerland in order to find my great great grandfather Joseph Suter. In the Staatsarchiv Luzern we found him!!
He was baptized Justus Josephus Balthasar Suter on March 14th 1825 in Weggis, his parents were Jacobus Justus Suter and Maria (Anna) Catharina Josepha Hoffman from Weggis. My ancestor came to Norway in 1857 and so did his brother Josephus Georgius Suter baptized February 7th 1830 in Weggis. They had a sister Anna Maria Catharina Suter who was baptized in July 19th 1826, she stayed in Weggis and got an illegitime son, Justus Suter, born and baptized August 31st 1848 in Weggis. My ancestor also had a brother named Josephus Clemens Silvester Suter, baptized December 31 1827 in Weggis, but I'm not sure what happened to him.
Their father Jacobus Justus Suter was baptized August 10th 1794 in Weggis, his parents were Jacobus Josephus Justus Sutter and Maria Anna Stalder fom Weggis. Their mother Maria Anna Catharina Josepha Hoffman was baptized January 20th 1800, her parents were Justus Josephus Hoffman and Anna Maria Catharina Stalder from Weggis.
I also found all their parents; Joseph Meinrad Suter, Maria Anna Erenbold, Josephus Euprepius Stalder, Anna Maria Josepha Hoffman, Joannis Josephi Hoffman, Maria Anna Zimmerman, Johan Peter Stalder and (Anna) Maria Catharina Dahinden, all from Weggis.
Joseph Meinrad Suter's parents were Hans Casper Sutter and Ana Lang.
My first question is if anyone know anything about these names, familys and people?
I only found these people baptized; how soon after their birth were they baptized? (Same day..?)
Where/How can I find their proffession; what they did for a living?
Is it possible to find where they lived in Weggis?
Did Switzerland have Censuses; registers of names and where they lived on a certain year?
I would be very happy if you know anything about this?
PS: We had the most fantastic weekend in Luzern and Weggis!! I can't imagine why my ancestor would want to leave it..!
