Madleni Wittwer Hans Frey Ehefr[au]: Madleni Wittwer (maiden name) is the wife of Hans Frey.
Stini Meyer des Ammanns tochter: des Ammanns = of the Ammann (position). If a surname I would also exepct a given name (compare with Hans Frey Ehefr[au]).
Wolf,

I also thought if Ammann was a surname, there would have been a given name with it. Thank you for confirming my interpretations and explaining the reasons.

I appreciate your and griffy's help with Maria's baptism record!

As far as I know, an "Ammann" (also Amtmann) is a representative of the sovereign.

Edit: I'm new at posting here and I don't know how to type my question outside of the quote.
So my question is: In the Ernest Thode dictionary, I read the meaning of Ammann/Amtmann as: official; bailiff or district judge; magistrate. Just out of curiosity, I would appreciate if you could explain some of the possible duties of a person who was an "Ammann" during the 1700s (Kirchdorf parish). Thanks.

Quotes make sense if either
- the posting you are responding to is not the most recent one, or
- you want to respond to a certain part of a previous post.
In these cases you don't "answer" and then use the quote icon right above the text window (this is to be used if you want to type a quote from e.g. a publication) - but start with the quote icon indicated on viewtopic.php?t=31422. You will then start an answer, quoting the other person's post:
Icon-quote.jpg
This contains a "start quote" (marked red, including a link to the quoted post) - the quoted text - and an "end quote" (marked in red).

First: decide whether you want to quote the entire text (with long posts usually not recommended) - and delete what you don't want to quote. Make sure that you don't touch the two "[....]".

Then: Type in your comment or follow-up question.

BTW: I have edited your post (see attached screenshot) - I hope it looks the way you wanted it to look :D.

Summary of the description on https://digital.idiotikon.ch/idtkn/id4. ... 5/mode/1up (right column, bottom)
Ammmann
1) Official, community leader, "Dorf-Schulze" (village mayor); also leader of a village ("Dorf-Ammann", "Gemeinds-Ammann"); transferred: leader of the so-called boys' court, that is the court of adult boys.
2) Shortened instead of "Land-Ammann", "Tal-Ammann"; the first head of the formerly sovereign high courts in Graubünden; in Domleschg "Landvogt", in the Italian valleys "podestà"; head of the country in the cantons with "Landsgemeinden" (annual voter's assembly).
3) Representative of the landlord, for example of a monastery or foundation, to receive the land rents and fees, sometimes also to administer the lower courts; as a rule, "Ammann" was also the name of the representative and administrator of the jurisdiction located in the "Vogtei" (bailiwick), the old "Zentgrafschaft" (court district), from which the office of "Landammann" developed.
4) Family name.

I understand when to use a quote now. I'm trying a test to see if I can use your instructions correctly. FYI: your edit of my post is how I wanted it to look :).

Edit: As you can see, the test post worked just fine.

Thank you for the link to the website about the occupation "Ammann" and the explanation of the duties. That is interesting to know. Actually, I have another question: I can't copy and paste the information in German on the website to DeepL for translation. So your summary in English is very helpful! Is there an option on the website for English (I can't see one)?

Thank you again for all of your help: whether it's for genealogy questions/translation or how to navigate the website - I really appreciate it!

No - you cannot copy&paste from the Idiotikon full text - and with all the abbreviations and different scripts I doubt DeepL would be able to provide a reasonable translation anyway.

What you can do: actually search for an expression - you'll then get a list of hits. If you click on an entry in the list, a summary pops up - and this you can copy&paste. That's actually what I did ;).

To have this translated it will be useful to complete all the abbreviations - see https://www.idiotikon.ch/woerterbuch/abk/allg.

Your explanation and screenshot of the Idiotikon page was very helpful and I searched for Ammann and found the summary. When DeepL translated the summery (I didn't complete the abbreviations beforehand), I could see how the abbreviations (as you explained) cause some difficulty in translation but your recommendation to complete the abbreviations makes sense.

Thank you for the explanation of how to find a summery - it was easy to do! I think completing the abbreviations would probably be more difficult but I may try to do that.

Also, your explanation of how to use a "quote" when posting, was very helpful too!

An "Ammann" in old Bern could have different functions depending on the place and time, but usually in a leading position.
A good description can also be found here, and the text can be copied ;)
