Andresen, from Hamburg to Wellington, New Zealand

Beitrag von waynenort » Fr 1. Mai 2020, 12:39

I'm tracing my wife's great great grandfather's (Andreas Christain Andresen) voyage from Hamburg to Wellington, New Zealand.

He was Danish and travelled to Hamburg to board the ship called the "Terpsichore" on the 15th November 1875. I aready have the Hamburg baoarding passenger list and New Zealand arrivals passenger list (18th March 1876) of the "Terpsichore". As well as plenty of documents on Andreas Christain Andresen himself.

I was hoping to find some newspaper shipping reports on the "Terpsichore".

Is there an online Newsapaper archive with digitised Germany newspapers from the 1875 to 1876 era.

Thanks, Wayne

Departure of the Terpsichore is noted in the 1875-11-18 Hamburg Newspaper, Captains name was Kahler.

Its crazy. Today you can travel from Hamburg to Wellington in like 24 hours. Back then the journey was like 4 months or so...

Thank you kindly Tawny. These newspaper reports were exactly what I was looking for.

The Captain's full name was: Frank Kholer with Surgeon Superintendent: Dr Mase Buthner

Out of interest this is an image of the Terpsichore which gives some perspective of types of sailing ships used to move across the world.

They were a the mercy of the wind and weather making it long and often dangerous voyage.

Again thank you :)
