Perhaps someone could help me in obtaining the following information:

The grandfather of my wife, Werner Arthur Stumpf, son of Werner Stumpf and Elisa Balsiger, was a Painter and a known academic in Bern. My wife, her sister, and my children are his only descendants, and are very curious to find out more about their genealogical roots - the Stumpf family was originally from the canton of Turgau.

Could you please tell me if there are any particular genealogy name databases that can be accessed through the web, or any book including the Stumpf family?

Stumpf have been citizens in canton Thurgau since before 1800 in Buchackern, and since the 19th century in Opfershofen. There have been other citizenships since before 1800 in cantons Aargau and Vaud.

Whilst it is not impossible to get an answer for such a recent date of birth (Werner Arthur Stumpf, born about 1910) on this forum, or find it in an online databse, the chances for this are rather small. I would therefore recommend to go the "official" way:

Contact the Zivilstandsamt Weinwelden (move the mouse over Weinfelden to get the actual info), which is responsible für Erlen (incl. Buchackern) as well as Bürglen (incl. Opfertshofen). Ask them whether your wife's ancestor can be identied on their register - which is usually done free of charge. At the same time, also ask what (if identified) you are expected to do and pay to get a "Familienschein": there is some hefty fee, but the Familienschein will give you names and all dates of a couple and all their children, and usually also the same info on the grandparents. Likely they will be able to supply the same for at least one earlier generation as well.

Once you got that info, come back here to the forum for further advice.
