Lüthi von Rothrist AG

I am researching my great-grandmother - Maria Louisa Lüthy or Lüthie, who was born in 1822, immigrated to the USA around 1851 and died in New York City in 1894. On her US death certificate her fathers name was listed as “Friedrich Lüthy” and her mothers name was listed as "Barbara". Her origin was listed as Kanton Aargau on her sons marriage certificate after her death. Any help in pointing me in the right direction to continue my research in Switzerland would be greatly appreciated.

With just this information you are looking for the needle in the haystack - but you are lucky: I believe I have found a suitable needle in familysearch:
Marie Louise Lüthi, born 20.12.1822 in Rothrist to Friedrich Lüthi and Barbara Rüegger. Unfortunately no sources are quoted.
You find more generations on the site - but keep in mind, that data from databases like FS-familytree should be treated with care, never just copy them without checking the original sources! The problem for you is, however, that only few Aargau church records are online - Rothrist is not amongst them.

Aargau is not my area of research - hopefully someone else can help with more detail.

PS: a note on Rothrist - until 1890 the community was named Niederwil.

I think it would be helpful to have some more information about Maria Louisa Lüthy.
Did she left Switzerland with her family (e.g. parents), with her husband, or on her own?

I found an interesting short research on this topic - unfortunately in German.

1855 left 300 people the town of Rothrist (Niederwil) and headed for America (via New Orleans). The township paid them to leave (only one-way tickets, I guess...).
There is also a picture from a contract, which is owned by the "Heimatmuseum Rothist". Maybe they have more information about this topic (info@museum-rothrist.ch).

If there will be no "Plan B", I could have a look in the "Staatsarchiv des Kantons Aargau" for the birth record mentioned by @Wolf, during my next visit (in a few weeks). I put it on the "wish list".

Thank you so much for the quick reply from both Wolf and bus68. Her December birth date fits in with her age on her death certificate. And the link Wolf provided on Family Search looks very promising. I can use Google translate for the national museum link provided by bus68, thank you so much for that. I don't know where to start with all this valuable information. I'm excited to get on the trail. By the way, she met her husband in New York City, and they got married sometime between 1851 and 1854. Her husband was Prussian, Ludwig Eugene Stäbner.

Do you have an entry from the ship's manifest for that crossing? Very often, other passengers from the same place of origin are listed there as well, which can help locate the place of origin more precisely.

Name, age and country of origin fit, but this is only a hint, not a proof.

Good news from Rothrist: I got the birth/baptism record for Marie Louisa Lüthi from the "Staatsarchiv des Kantons Aargau".
Bad news from Rothrist: I have yet not found the missing link between New York and Rothrist. No final proof today...

I did not found an entry in the marriage registers (Band 01 and Band 11).

The data provided by familysearch.org seems to be quiet accurate. I got today some more information about the parents and grandparents and will check this out, but it will take some days until my next update.

Both parents and 3 (out of 4) grandparents lived also in Rothrist AG. Research will still take place in the parish records of Rothrist AG. Before 1715, Rothrist AG was part of the parish of Zofingen AG. The records from Zofingen are online available (links can be found somewhere in this Forum).
Note: Rothrist AG and Zofingen AG were part of the Kanton Bern before 1803. But your research will still takes place in the Kanton Aargau.

One of the grandmothers was born in the Kanton Basel-Landschaft. The church records of Basel-Landschaft are online and quiet well documented.

Luise Lüthi war also nicht Teil einer grösseren Auswanderergruppe und gehörte schon aufgrund des früheren Datums ihrer Überfahrt nicht zur Zwangsauswanderung von Rothrist im Jahre 1855. Mit ihr reiste nur noch eine Familie Vetterli aus dem Thurgau, in dem sich auch mehrere Heimatorte der Lüthi befinden. Sonst sehe ich auf die Schnelle nur noch eine Einzelperson Engler aus der Ostschweiz, daneben jedoch keine weiteren Schweizer.

Es kam oft vor, dass Frauen oder ganze Familien einem früher ausgewanderten Verwandten nachreisten. Einzelne Frauen ohne Verwandte oder Bekannte waren aber in jener Zeit nach meiner Beobachtung schon ehrer selten auf den Schiffen.

Leider fehlen m.W. genau für die relevante Zeit um 1851 die Passregister des Kantons und des Bezirks Zofingen.

... daneben jedoch keine weiteren Schweizer.

Mir ist noch aufgefallen, dass (unterhalb des Eintrages für Frau Lüthi) ein Passagier mit unvollständigem und für mich unleserlichen Namen aufgeführt ist, der (wie Ehemann Ludwig Stäbner) aus "Preussen" stammt...
Ok, vielleicht nur ein Zufall und eine schlechte Verschwörungstheorrie .

Aufgrund der Schreibweise und der Symbole des Schiffsschreibers ist die Person unterhalb von Luise Lüthi eine Frau und heisst ebenfalls Luise. Ihre Nachname beginnt mit F, ob die hinterlegte Transkription Freon richtig ist, lass ich mal offen. Ihren Mann hat Luise wohl erst in den USA kennengelernt. Die beiden allein reisenden Luisen haben sich vermutlich für die Überfahrt zusammengeschlossen. Die Schreiber haben meist Kammer- oder Deckweise aufgeschrieben. Und so, wie sie die verschiedenen Sprachen verstanden haben. Da waren Schweizer auch oft aus Deutschland oder Welsche aus Frankreich. Immerhin das scheint bei Luise und Vetterlis korrekt.

I am overwhelmed by your kindness in locating local Suisse information on my great-grandmother and her family. It has changed the direction of my searching and has very much simplified my future work. I will go over all your input and assemble a picture that will be most appreciated by other members of my family who are also in the hunt for our relatives in 'the old country.' Thank you so much.

I have information on my great-grandmothers husband Ludwig Stabner. He was from Poznan, Prussia and came over from Hamburg Germany in June of 1851 spending 6 months in England before departing for the USA. He applied for citizenship and that was granted in 1857. He married Marie Louisa Luthi sometime between 1854 and 1855 in New York city. I'm still trying to locate that marriage certificate.
