Immigrants from Eastern Europe into German speaking regions (often Jewish) have been forced especially during the late 18th and 19th century to adopt surnames familiar to "German ears". Rosenkranz looks at first sight as if that could be the case here as well. However, to adopt a Christian symbol (the rosary wreath) as surname for a Jewish family is less likely. On the other hand Rosenkranz has evolved as surname in German speaking regions (identifying a person as rosary wreath maker) since the 14th century. In Ragaz (today Bad Ragaz) Rosenkranz appears already around 1600: the explanation of a Jewish origin from Eastern Europe does therefore not work in this instance. Evolution from Rosenkranzmacher is a possible explanation - but pure speculation.

Jakob Anton Rosenkranz was born about 1809 - the year is mentioned in the Familienbuch Ragaz - but no record was found in the baptismal register. After the death of his wife and the recently born son Gregor in 1844 he emigrated in 1845 to Amerika with the surviving children. He married again and had more children. Data on his children (born both in Switzerland and USA) can be found on familysearch and findagrave. However, these data contain some errors and are partially contradicting: more research in American sources would be required to clarify the situation.

Parents: Josephus Leontius (Joseph Leonz) Rosenkranz (1762-1832) and Elisabeth Ackermann (1785/86-1864) had their first baptism recorded in Ragaz in 1811. There is no marriage entry in Ragaz. A possible explanation would be that they lived and got married in another parish before 1809 and moved to Ragaz between 1809 and 1811. Their ancestors were from Ragaz, however … another (less likely) explanation might therefore be that it was "forgotten" to document the marriage and the baptism 1809 in Ragaz. It is noteworthy in this context, that the baptism of Joseph Leonz in 1762 is also documented in the Familienbuch only, not the baptismal register.

Grandparents: Anton Rosenkranz and Catharina Mogg. There are (at least) two fitting Anton Rosenkranz baptised in Ragaz - 1717 and 1721. Unfortunately the marriage entry 1743 does not mention the parents-in-law. Based on just the church records (including the family registers) it cannot be decided, who is Jakob Anton's grandfather - might even be yet another Anton. Ragaz belonged to the Abbey of Pfäfers - and their archive is now kept a Stiftsarchiv St.Gallen: they might have additional documents to follow this up - research would be rather time consuming, however.

Below is some of the information I have found online about my ancestors in this post. I'm continuing to research and will do my best to provide relevant updates!

Thank you for these comments and additional info, Roxanne, but there are some flaws …

According to this, Jacob Anton Rosenkranz was born 1809 (no exact date) in Ragaz. As pointed out above, there is no such baptism record in Ragaz. That not a full date is given, indicates, that the author has not seen a baptism record either. This Rosenkrnaz family were citizens of Ragaz - and I frequently see the incorrect conclusion, this would be the place of birth: a citizen of Ragaz (in this case his father) could live somewhere else and have children baptised somewhere else. If there is no record in Ragaz (and if we disregard the explanation that the priest just forgot to make a note as very unlikely), the most plausible explanation is that Jacob Anton was born/baptised somewhere else … where. still needs to be found out.

"His first wife at her death was not allowed a Christian burial in Switzerland as only cremation was allowed at the time." I am sorry, but this text doesn't make sense. The first crematorium in Switzerland was built in 1889 in reformed Zürich - Catholics were against cremation even longer.
"His Jewish heritage may have been of this area of origin?" just mentioned an Jewish heritage - without any proof. Let me quote myself from above: "Immigrants from Eastern Europe into German speaking regions (often Jewish) have been forced especially during the late 18th and 19th century to adopt surnames familiar to "German ears". Rosenkranz looks at first sight as if that could be the case here as well. However, to adopt a Christian symbol (the rosary wreath) as surname for a Jewish family is less likely. Also a Jewish family would not have lived in Ragaz but - if at the Rhine River - on the other side of the river and a bit further North in Vorarlberg (Hohenems).
