Schneider à canton de Vaud

Post by waldemar86 »

Hi, im from chile, maybe you know something about my ancestors:

They came to Chile during the migration to colonize. In 1883 they signed contract in Lucern, but their origin canton its Vaud (thats what we found on a document here). His name was Melchior Schneider (married first time with a woman last name Moser (french origin, dont know her first name) They had 3 children (ages in 1884): Carolina (13), Serafine(11) and Friedrich (8). The woman Moser died, thats all i know. In the second marriage with Katherine Muller, they had 3 more children (ages in 1884): Alois (4), Marie (2 1/2) and Anton (1).

So, my grand grand mother Carolina Schneider Moser, came to chile in 1884 but his father Melchior died six month later, so they became orfans... and their lands were lost and given to another (maybe family). Here, they changed her last name to Schneyder in the contract, but in chile, at the civil registration her last name was Schneider, so i dont know which one is the original one. Im looking for any information about her birth place, real canton of origin, and who were her parents. Please help me !!!

What exactly does the document tell you - just Vaud or anything else? If in doubt: could you scan and post it here?

Schneider is a very(!) common name in all German speaking regions (German for tailor) - much less in French speaking parts: it is only during the 20th century (mostly even after WW II) that Schneider families in larger numbers gained citizenship in Vaud. Just 2 did that before 1900:
- in 1880 a family from Germany gained citizenship of Paudex.
- In 1787 a family from France gained citizenship of Prilly.
So the latter place (Prilly) will be the more likely place of origin of your ancestor (if from Vaud). If the family were actually citizens of Prilly, they should be listed in the Civil Registry there. Unless you get an answer here (would be very lucky), contact the Civil Registry Office Lausanne (responsible for Prilly) and ask if your ancestor can be identified in their register, and (if yes) what you have to do (and pay) to get documents about the family.

OK - so we don't have an actual document (official piece of paper), just a name on a list, with limited information (origin not defined - or are the sources described somewhere on the page?).

In this case, I guess, contacting the Civil Registry Office is your best bet. Let us know what their response is.

Hi

I don't think that the Civil Registry Office is the right place to ask, because all the persons were born before Civil Registry Offices existed.

The link for genealogical research possibilites in Lausanne (births, marriages, deaths, census and other documents)
http://www.lausanne.ch/thematiques/cult ... logie.html

I will have a look if I can find out more info in other sources, but I need to know more details and the sources where you found the infos you posted here.

Svenja
