Foglia in Capolago TI

Post by odonnelr » Wed 7. Dec 2011, 12:22

Hi All,
First post, I hope someone can give me some hints and information please.
The family name we are researching is Foglia.
The link we have is to Capolago
Fullname is Giovanni Antonio Foglia (his naturalisation papers state he was in the Swiss military) born on 11 April 1861 at Capolago, Switzerland. Married in 1882 in England before emigrating to Australia in 1883
Family members remember visiting relatives in Lausanne. There was also an archbishop in Italy who was related.

Thank you
Anne

Hi Anne,

The birth records of the catholic parish of Capolago are available on microfilm in an LDS center (Mormons) in your area under the number:
FHL INTL Film 1751034

This film also includes some family registers (Stato d'anime) of the 19th century. The records are most probably in Latin. For your further research it is of special importance to know the origin (burghership, attinenza) rather than only the place of birth of Giovanni Antonio. You should find this location in the birth record.
The civil registers of that time are in the State Archives in Bellinzona. To my knowledge, they don't make researches, thus you would be obliged to appear there personally.

Come back to this forum if necessary.

Peter

Capolago has been place of citizenship for Foglia since before 1800 - so there is a fair chance Giovanni Antonio Foglia was not only born there, but citizen. There is no proof, however - the alternative communities are
- Grancia
- Lugano
- Paradiso
One line in Lugano was originally from
- Castagnola (another alternative in the 19th century).

Capolago is mentioned in the 1940 edition of Familiennamenbuch - but not in the more recent editions. That means the family became extinct (as citizens of Capolago) between 1935 and 1962.

Many thanks for the very helpful information and the prompt replies.

We hope to visit the area mid 2012 and hope to do some further research while we are there.

Thanks again

Anne

Hi Anne,

If you have a chance to visit the State Archives in Bellinzona, you should order the Ruoli di popolazione di Capolago, containing all families with burghership of this community from about 1855 until 1965. You must therefore make sure in the birth record, that the family you search for, has indeed the burghership of Capolago (attinenza, patriziato). The Ruoli usually don't have an index, thus you have to check the tome page by page. Furthermore, these Archives do not allow do take pictures!

Thanks Peter,

We would like to have some research carried out before we travel to Italy and Switzerland. Is anyone able to recommend a good web site, research group or local researcher? please

Thanks

Anne

I would recommend to contact the local genealogical society - link in this thread.

Thank you Wolf.

We have noticed the area of Foglia river and Foglia city in Italy. Curious as this is the family name but thought all our connections were up north. Initially got excited but now understand that Foglia means "leaf" is this why the area is so named?

Thanks
Anne
