Sutter im Kanton St.Gallen

Post by d7tcpa » Tue 24. Oct 2017, 01:19

I am trying to find information on the ancestors of Ambrose Sutter (born December 2, 1815, in a location unknown to me; died January 19, 1899, in Burlington, Iowa, USA). He had four sons: Robert (born November 1, 1845), Meinrad (born April 17, 1847), Anton (born December 28, 1848) and Bonifaz (born August 3, 1850). He was married to Amanza (maiden name is unknown to me) Sutter (born January 31, 1824; died January 6, 1904). The family emigrated from somewhere in St. Gallen canton (not Rebstein) to Burlington, Iowa, USA, I believe sometime approximately 1865-1880. Any information would be sincerely appreciated. Thank you.

Kurt tells me, that he didn't find an Ambros(ius) Suter/Sutter in Toggenburgisches Genealogienwerk. Consequently the following locations can be ignored now: Alt St.Johann, Ebnat, Kappel, Wildhaus. ... remaining are Degersheim, Jonschwil, Niederglatt, Oberbüren, Pfäfers (ehem. Vasön und Vättis), St.Gallenkappel, Wartau.

I controlled the baptism book of Jonschwil. Unfortunately I did not find Ambros Sutter. Ambros is not a typical name in Jonschwil.

I have checked the "remaining" potential parishes ("Bürgerorte"), the ones where church records are online.

No Ambrosius Sutter (born 02.12.1815) in
- Degersheim catholic
- Niederglatt reformed
- Oberbüren
- St.Gallenkappel
- Wartau
This leaves parishes where records are not (yet) online:
- Degersheim reformed
- Niederglatt catholic
- Pfäfers
- or any other parish which is not connected to a "Bürgerort", in which case it would be looking for the needle in the heystack - so keep your fingers crossed!
