Jetzer von Lengau AG

I am looking for information on John Baptist Jetzer who emmigrated with his family from Switzerland to Richland County, Ohio in about 1833. We think he came from Vogelsang Canton Aargau, or Lengau?

We think his wife’s name was Bridget. Children born in Switzerland who made the trip with him included John Baptist II, Cecelia, Bridget, Rosina, Mary and another boy.

But that is all we know. We don’t know John’s parents names and whether he had any brothers or sisters. We are not sure where Bridget lived, her nationality or her maiden name.

There are nine generations of Jetzer/Yetzer relatives in America descended from John Baptist I. We have a family reunion every year in Shelby, Ohio. I would love to be able to tell them about their relatives in Switzerland! Thank you for any help you can give!

Hi Christina,

Vogelsang is a hamlet within the community of Lengnau, Canton of Aargau. Lengnau is one of the origins of the Jetzer family - and in fact, the Jetzers are still living in Vogelsang.

Unfortunately, the church records of Lengnau are not available on microfilm in an LDS center. But you could ask the civil registration for a copy of Johann Baptist's page in the old Family Register (Bürgerrodel) of Lengnau, which starts around 1818. They will ask you for an evidence of your descendance and the service is not free, but they will inform you about the cost before they send out anything.

Further research must be done in the State Archives in Aarau, where it is very difficult to find a non-professional supporter.

You message also clears up the location. We were always told Vogelsang but I couldn't find a town by that name.

Thank you for the notice that the church records are not on microfilm. I ordered some microfilm from LDS and was really struggling to read them. Now I know not to look there.

I hope to hear from Doris and if she is unable to help, I will try the resources you mentioned.

Hello Christina!

I was just researching our family name on the back of a photo of our family crest and voila--found this post! My grandmother Helen Jetzer von lengnau lived in Brooklyn, NY and gave birth to five children, one of whom is my mother Audrey. Not sure if we are related, but thought I should reach out.

Hello Lloyd, great to hear from you! Unfortunately I don't have any information beyond when John Baptist Jetzer/Yetzer came to Ohio. He changed the family name shortly after arriving as there were many Anglo families in the area. I haven't been able to find them on a ship's list. I have tried to contact a few Jetzers in Lengnau, but to no avail. I am now trying to contact the government agency Peter mentioned in an earlier post.

If you have any information further back from your grandmother Helen, maybe we can establish a connection.
