Range in Retschow
This is what I know: Hans Joachim Range (born 1811 in Retschow parish), the son of "Hans Jürgen Range" and "Anna Maria Dorothea Vick", immigrated (along with his wife and children) to the USA in the late 1860s. I found the baptismal entry for his father Hans Jürgen Range (born 1783 in Retschow parish) whose parents are "Heiner Range" and "Anna Marg. Tamsen". Hans Jürgen Range and his wife Anna Maria Dorothea Vick have (at least) two other children: Sophia Dorothea Henrica (born 1809 in Retschow parish) and Johann Jochim Peter Friederich (born 1814 in Retschow parish).
I searched the records from Retschow and a few nearby parishes for the baptismal, marriage and death entries for Heiner Range and his wife Anna Marg. Tamsen (there is a possible baptismal entry in 1740 and death entry in 1811 for her). There are records for two men named "Hinrich Range" and "Jochim Hinrich Range" (whose names are similar to Heiner Range) who were born about six years apart and buried about one year apart in Retschow parish. I have not found the baptismal entry for a Hinrich Range (born about 1741 - according to the 1819 Mecklenburg-Schwerin census in Retschow and a death record in 1822 in Retschow parish), but I found the baptismal entry for a Jochim Hinrich Range (born 1747 in Parkentin parish and died in 1823 in Retschow parish).
This is what I need to know: There are several possible records (e.g. marriage, baptism of children, etc.) for the men named Hinrich Range and Jochim Hinrich Range. I would appreciate help with transcribing and translating some of them, so that I can analyze the information and try to figure out which one could be the correct father of Hans Jürgen Range and also the names of his siblings.
Before I post the "possible" records for these persons, I'll post the baptismal entries for Hans Jürgen Range and his three children. The children's entries might have some helpful information i.e. relatives of Hans Jürgen Range, and I need a bit of help with transcribing and translating them.
Thank you!
Question: In the baptismal entry (below) for Han Jürgen Range, I think the mother's maiden name "Tamsen" would be the female form of the family name "Tamss", because two of the witnesses have a similar surname "Tamss" - if I read it correctly? There is another example of this name on the next page that might help (see attached image) on entry 17/1713 for the 2nd witness. BTW I've found other possible records for the "Tamss" family and the name is spelled Tambsen and Tampzen - if I read it right, so there might be spelling variations of the family name.

Re: Range in Retschow
Third witness first: I read "Heinicken".
Now the difficult part: I have combined all 4 snippets for easier comparison: I am not familiar with the names in this region - which doesn't help. But I guess we agree about the first three letters: "Tam…".
Snippet 4: if I wouldn't have a larger snippet I would read *Tamth* - but the writer seems to write S this way - H seems to be quite different. But what is the character in 2 and 3 between the m and the s? "Tamts" doesn't look very plausible for me … and the dot after 2/3/4 may indicate that this is an abbreviated name.
Now to the mother: without more text for comparison I would read "Tamler(in)" … but another name beginning with Tam???
Sorry - not really much help ☹ … I hope someone more familiar with the region can be more helpful.

Thank you, Wolf for reading the name of the witness and creating a picture of the 4 snippets - this is very helpful for comparison. Although, I'm still stumped as to what the mother's name is. With the help from Francoise, possibly we'll figure this out.Wolf hat geschrieben: Di 11. Jul 2023, 16:24 Third witness first: I read "Heinicken".

Re: Range in Retschow
I had read the mother's name as possibly "Tamsen" which I think could be a form of the family name "Tamss" or on second thought, I think "Tams" with one "s", but I'm really not sure.
In a previous post, there is a comment that mentions: more text for comparison. I think that's a good idea, so I searched the baptismal register for Retschow parish for the names "Tam???" starting with entries quite some time before Hans Jürgen Range was born in 1783. Fortunately, these names are fairly common and I posted several pages with entries that contain these names. I noticed that there seems to be a bit of change over time in the spelling. For example, before 1780 I did not notice a name that was spelled exactly like the snippets 2/3/4 which maybe an abbreviated name, as mentioned in a previous comment. Some of the names before 1780 have a similar looking "s" at the end but instead of having a dot after the "s" there is the letter(s) "e" or "en". There are also a few family names in the entries (not Tam???) that have the same "s" with the letters "en" at the end.
It's still unclear to me whether the various spellings of "Tam???" are actually different names or perhaps different writers spelled the same name(s) differently?
To keep the thread from getting long, I attached the URL for each page from familysearch rather than the images. If the images are not viewable from home, let me know and I will post the pages.
The possible baptismal entry number 831 (year 1740) and death entry number 4 (year 1811) for the mother Anna Marg. Tam??? may be helpful (see attached images). I haven't confirmed yet if these records are the correct ones. I think that Anna Marg. Tam??? may have been a widow when she married Heiner Range. I'll explain this in detail later. I will post baptismal entries for Hans Jürgen Range's possible siblings later or the images are available on familysearch using these image numbers: 134 - entry 1530, 138 - entry 1579, 144 - entry 1629 (use the same URL for the pages).
I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas about the different names "Tam???" in these pages.
Thank you!

Re: Range in Retschow
Good day
I know the pages but you have to be patient. I am only on 19 at home. then I have vile time to read through.
There is also a tree with birth RANGE from 1819. This has nothing to do with the Hans Jürgen! The woman is not VICK!
Since there is much RANGE I look exactly which RANGE with when married. So vile time one must have.
to teams, James... or differently: there was no ID card in former times. Every priest wrote the name as he thought it was right.
After the marriage of RANGE Hans Jürgen, I must look whether he is really born in Retschow. The reason: the marriage of the parents (if the father is Heiner) is not in Retschow.
So some patience, it is not so simple.
To last: the Germans have not noted much in the certificate. The people often had 2 or 3 first names, but all were not noted. There are also 2 Hans Jürgen RANGE. So always read carefully and look back also the marriage. If one does not find, one came any not select because it fits so. This is not genealogy for me.
See you soon.

Re: Range in Retschow
In this death entry I definitely read Tamssen (comparing it with Groß [or Gross] Siemen) - but, as Françoise has pointed out, spellings were not fixed at the time and one has to cope with differences for the same name.
The village name is spelled (today) "Groß Siemen" - but similar to Tamssen (not Tamßen) here it is written "Gross Siemen" - see https://community.familysearch.org/de/d ... ent_473880 for the "Pastoren-S".

You are right, that there are many Range families in Retschow and some of the nearby villages. I have been researching the family of Hans Joachim Range son of Hans Jürgen Range and Anna Maria Dorothea Vick for a few years now. I'm aware of the two men named Hans Jürgen RANGE -- one whose wife's maiden name is VICK and the other whose wife's name is LANGE. There are several records for these two men and their wives that I will share with you and I actually think that the wives "VICK and LANGE" are possibly the same person, since the wife named VICK was born out of wedlock and has a step-father named LANGE, but this is very difficult to confirm. I have put this question on the shelf (as I'm getting ahead of myself) and must focus on solving one problem at a time!
I agree that it is important to confirm which one is the correct Range with a marriage entry.
I will be patient. Thank you.

The comparison of the maiden name to the name of the place in the next entry, makes it clear to me that the 4th and 5th letters are "ss" in the maiden name "Tamssen". Thank you, Wolf - this is very helpful to know for researching this family. The links for the place Groß Siemen and the explanation about "Pastoral S" are also helpful - I appreciate the information.Wolf hat geschrieben: Fr 14. Re: Range in Retschow
With the maiden name "Tamssen" (in the death record for Anna Margaretha Range) now known, this name can be compared to the name of the father in the baptismal record posted previously for Ann Greth (I assume Greth is a variation of the name Margaretha?), to confirm if the two records are for the same person.
Fortunately, the birth date 28 März (March) 1740 mentioned in the death entry, matches the baptism date 28 Martÿ 1740 (I assume Martÿ must be a variation of März since the baptismal entry is listed between the months of Febr. and April).
Françoise mentioned: ... in former times. Every priest wrote the name as he thought it was right.
I read the father's surname in the baptismal record as "Tamse", which I think is quite similar to the name "Tamssen" in the death record.
Question: Do you think the names are for the same family?
If both names are for the same family, than the baptismal record for Ann Greth Tamse daughter of Jürgen Tamse and Engel Fahrenheims in Retschau/Retschow and the death record for Anna Margaretha Range nee Tamssen wife of Jochim Hinrich Range in Reinshagen, are for the same person.

Re: Range in Retschow
Good day,
to know if Anna Margaretha Tamssen is the right name and given name, you must find the marriage Greth is a given name that often occurs. However, if the child is named Margaretha, it is written as Margaretha. Marty is the Latin word for March.
I fan only the marriage of 5/6 Johann Joachim Range but not with cups Margaretha. I will look at an old map of Retschow to look in the area.
Greetings
Françoise

Re: Range in Retschow
I also searched the marriage register in Retschow parish for a "Greth Tamsen or Margaretha Tamssen" and there seems to only be an entry for "Margaretha Tam?sen and Hinrich Farenheim" in the year 1764, 6th entry on the left side (see the attached image). I realize that this is very difficult to confirm, but could this marriage of a Margaretha Tam?sen in 1764, possibly have been her first marriage and then as a widow married a Jochim Hinrich Range who is the husband in the 1811 death record? This is just a thought to keep in mind as we research - that's all.noisette hat geschrieben: Sa 15. Jul 2023, 09:22 Good day,
to know if Anna Margaretha Tamssen is the right name and given name, you must find the marriage Greth is a given name that often occurs. However, if the child is named Margaretha, it is written as Margaretha. Marty is the Latin word for March.
I fan only the marriage of 5/6 Johann Joachim Range but not with cups Margaretha. I will look at an old map of Retschow to look in the area.

Re: Range in Retschow
Good evening,
You are very active in this. This marriage record I had also found. It must also be the wife of Range Hinrich.
Heinrich Fahrenheit have had only one child, (daughter). However, this is also deceased. Since there is a gap in the death certificate, one can not find the death record of Heinrich Fahrenheit. In the list of names it stops at 1773. The first child of Jürgen Range came in 1775.
The children Range/Tams: 1775 Christina Maria 16.09.1775. The father as Hinrich , wife Anna
-1778 Johann Heinrich 09.01.1778 also there Hinrich and Anna, the parents,
- 1779 Hans Heinrich, the file is very badly written (number 1601)
-1780 Johann Joachim Heinrich , parents Hinrich and Anna.
- 1783 there the father is called the only time as Heiner and the wife Anna Margaretha.
At all Tamssen I found only Anna Greta, so she must be the Anna Margaretha.
I am still looking for the marriage between 1773-75.
Greetings
Françoise

Re: Range in Retschow
Good day,
I close today because I can not find anything else.
I had once written that there are 2 Hans Jürgen Range. Meanwhile I believe that in 1819, the child of Hans Jürgen and Anna Maria, could also be from Range/Vick. The mother is born Lange. The mother of Vick 1787 married Friedrich Lange in 1788. It could be that Anna Maria Dorothea had taken very late the name Lange. Or she was recognized as his daughter. Such a thing also exists in adult age.
This means that even at her death one must look for Mrs. Lange and Vick.
Greetings
Françoise

Hello Françoise,
Thank you very much for your time and answers to my questions about the Range family. I understand some parts of what you wrote, but I still need clarification of other parts (when you have the time), so that I better understand what you meant. I will post the questions about this at another time.
Thank you again - I really appreciate your help with the Range family.
Regards,
Debra

Re: Range in Retschow
As I mentioned before, the baptismal entries for the children of Hans Jürgen Range and Anna Maria Dorothea Vick, might have information about their relatives (witnesses). Entry 8 is for the first child Sophia Dorothea Hinrica Range (born 1809 in Retschow parish). I think my transcription and translation are correct and I just need a bit of help with one word for the 3rd witness and a question.
Images: 1st is the headings, 2nd is columns 1-5, 3rd columns 6-7.
BTW: I think that Jochim Hinrich Rust the step-father of the 2nd witness Dorothea Sophia Anna Langen, could possibly be the 2nd husband of Maria Dorothea Vick who is the child's grandmother. This is difficult to confirm, so I will probably explain this later.
Thank you!

Question: I think the maiden name "Langen" for the 2nd witness is the female form of the family name "Lange"?
