Jeanne_El_Gugy.png
Conrad Gugy, Bruder von Barthélemy :
son of Hans George Gugi, a French speaking Swiss officer serving in the Dutch army, and Thérèse Reis
(...)
By an inter vivos deed of gift for services rendered, which was drawn up on 13 Jan. 1786, Gugy had left a life interest in his seigneuries, movables, and immovables to Elizabeth Wilkinson, who lived in his manor-house, and all his properties passed to her. It was intended that after her death they should go to Gugy’s brother Barthélemy, whose son Louis* in fact inherited them, Barthélemy having predeceased her.

I am very grateful for everyone's help and kindness. There is so much valuable information in the documents you all generously shared with me. Thank you! The documents about the Barthelemy family, in particular, were fascinating to read.
I made two other discoveries I want to share with you about the Gugi family, but I cannot seem to upload them [see below]. They are taken from the parish register of the Reformed Church in Altnau.
1) I found a record of the Baptism of Hans Conrad Gugi from October of 1735. Unfortunately, the record can barely be read. It is at the very bottom of the page on the right-hand side.
2) I found a record of the Baptism of Bartholomew Gugi on 1 January 1737.
The records show Jeanne Therese Rees/Rais was from Delsberg/Delemont in the former Prince-Bishopric of Basel. Now, Delsberg/Delemont is part of the Canton of Jura. Unfortunately, the parish registers of Delsberg/Delemont can only be consulted at a FamilySearch Affiliate Library. I spent most of Saturday morning studying the parish register looking a record of Jeanne Therese's Baptism, but I could not find one. There is no searchable index nor have the parish registers been indexed either. It was very slow going. The name Rees/Rais is quite common in the town, but I could not find a record of Jeanne Therese's Baptism there. I checked from 1695 to 1720. It is possible that I missed it, but I checked very slowly and carefully.

In case you don't know about it, there's a "Genealogical circle of the former bishopric of Basel". The members have been indexing the parish church books for years and you can find a simple search engine on the website. A more advanced search engine is also available.
Unfortunately the whole website is in French, and you won't be able to get detailed results unless you're a member of that genealogical society. Nevertheless, it can point you in the right direction. I didn't find any matching Jeanne Thérèse Reis/Rais in Delémont, but maybe I missed something. It's also possible that she was born elsewhere and only originated from Delsberg.

Thank you for checking this index of the former Prince-Bishopric of Basel for me. It is a fascinating resource to explore. I spent some today studying it and checking for a possible match, but to no avail.
I think you are correct: the family of Jeanne Thérèse Reis/Rais was originally from Delsberg/Delémont, but she herself was born elsewhere. According to the Register of Swiss Surnames, the name Rais is also found in the towns of Courroux, Courtételle, Develier, and Vermes. Alas, all of these towns are in the Canton of Jura. Their parish registers can only be accessed at a Family History Center or a FamilySearch Affiliate Library. Trying to uncover Jeanne Thérèse's will be rather slow going, to say the least.

I assume you mean this record.
From what we can see, we're mainly dealing with protestant families (Gügi, Teissier). What are the odds that "Johanna Rees" from Delémont was born into a protestant family too? Delémont and canton Jura is mostly catholic. What if we're looking for her baptism in the wrong place?

Here there are the two baptismal entries - unfortunately partially difficult (to say the least) to read - especially the one from 1735, which is out of focus in addition to parts "hiding" in the fold: Altnau-Tauf-17351000-Gugi-Detail.jpg
Johannes Conrad, son of Georg "in holländischen Diensten" and Johanna Rees, was obviously born & baptised abroad - there is a mention of a "Taufschein". After the mother's name (Johanna Rees) I read "Relig: ...." - does that imply she was not reformed (see 1737 as well)? Altnau-Tauf-17370101-Gugi-Detail.jpg
This is better to read. Bartholom. was also born/baptised not in Altnau - any proposals about where? Again there is a remark after the mother's name: "...tific" - possibly indicating her denomination?

Am linken Rand lese ich:
d. 1. Jan.
1737
durchgestrichen: Tournaÿ
[He]rzogenbusch getauft
Und dann bei Familysearch :
Bartholomaeus_Gugy_1737.png
Quelle
Johann_Cornrad_Gugy_1734-10-05.png

Both baptisms (at the Grote Kerk) can be found here as well.
We can thus put to rest the assertions that Bartholomeus was born in Paris or Conrad in the Hague.

I don't think so. It simply indicates that the pastor made a correction :
Johanna Theresia Rees
rectific[atio] : von Dellspurg
Maybe the pastor first wrote "Dellpurg" and then added the "s"...

Laut Taufbuch 's-Hertogenbosch is Bartholomas Gugy am 01.01.1737 geboren.

Thank you for these additional details! I enjoyed studying the Dutch Baptism records of the Gugi sons.
I am deeply grateful to you and Wolf for all of your kindness and assistance with this project.
