Deutsche Fassung dieses Posts s.u.
Bonjour,

Wolf,

I am really happy that you was able to find data that my parents have tried to find few years ago!

Is it possible to get the data in descending order, from Berthlime Hohl to Emma by example, i don't find where she died and for Berta, i have no informations.

If we can go descending, this means that we can found brothers and sisters also.

Adella Hohl born in Chicago was from the "branche" Hohl from Wolfhalden, she is the wife of Oskar, child of Konrad.

Best regards,

Philippe Hohl

Do you think that those extracts from "Bürgerregisters" from Heriseau are photocopies from Microfilms?

I don't know - but as long as you are sure about the source, it doesn't really matter whether the original paper has been copied or whether it is a reprint from microfilm.
I have found the following microfilms on the Mormons site, do you think they contain the same sheets?
They certainly do not: the films you quote are baptismal, wedding, and burial registers - not a "Bürgerregister" which compiles all data of several individuals into a family sheet.

Wolf,

The three microfilms are now in Brussels, last thursday, I was able to have a look at those films, the first time, it's really difficult to recognize names and sunames!
I found that they uses the Sütterlin alphabet, I also found the Sütterlin font, this is really helpfull to recognize those names.

The fonts is naming SUETTER.TTF if someone is interrested, it can be found on internet at the following site:

The "....in" was quite common then to indicate the person was female. I am not sure whether this was common in all German speaking parts of the world - but certainly in many parts of Germany, Austria, Switzerland. It's still used occasionally when talking about a female person - though not any longer in "official" writing.

This was common for all names - not just some: the time span when it was common will have differed somewhat for different regions, but whilst it was common it was used generally.

There may have been times when it was used differently in different records: as I said, it is still used when talking about a women in some German speaking areas, though not in official documents. It is therefore quite possible, that during some time period the priest still used it in his church records, whilst the civil registry office didn't use it any longer. This can only be answered locally.

I agree with you but I found in the register only two names writed like that, I think they don't use it when it was a long name like Sonderegger or Bischofberger or Baenziger but well for short names like Hohl or Tobler.

Could this be one reason?

No, this is not the reason. I have Hugenberger-in (1555) and Suesstrunck-in (1629), like also Hug-in (1629) or Greser-in (1624)!Hans Gräser

The length of the name is definitely not the reason for the difference.

Did you really get different usage of this affix in the same register (same type of register and same community) alternating in a limited time range? Then the only explanation coming to my mind would be different writers with different habits: would those entries be written by different hands?

Hohl - Hol - Holl - Hölin

Beitrag von Wolf » Mi 29. Mär 2006, 21:26

Hol is not listed in Familiennamenbuch - most likely just another spelling for Hohl.

Holl are German families, gaining citizenship in several Swiss cantons (GE, LU, SH, TI, VD, ZH) during the 20th century - not related to your Hohl and not in North-East Switzerland. So - if listed in Appenzell - most likely just another spelling for Hohl.

Hölin is an interesting one: It is an old (pre-1800) family of Ormalingen BL. But if listed in Appenzell registers I would consider it more likely to be another variation of Hol for females: the "in" affix is often combined with a/o/u being converted to umlauts. Are all your Hölin entries females - or do you have a male Hölin as well?

Now that I knew that Jules Albert died in Brussels in 1912, I'am looking for the died of Emma Hohl, after the death of J-A, Emma seems to be back in Switzerland, she is probably death in St-Gallen after 1912 where her sister Bertha was living, could it be possible to investigate if she is death in SG?
I also miss The death of Bertha.

Hallo Regula,
