Spelling differences on American documents on Swiss emigrants don't bother me at all when phonetically similar and plausible. Similar with years on census data - often calculated from an age … 1 year difference is just the "rounding error".
Thank you, Wolf, for your helpful answer about, "Spelling differences on American documents ...", and for confirming that the Florian Zogg in these Wisconsin records is the correct one.

Louis Zogg oo 1917 Amanda Kodell

Beitrag von Debra Palmer » Mi 11. Jun 2025, 02:09

As I mentioned before, I checked the data (on familysearch) for the children of Florian Zogg and Bertha Waedel, using birth records, census records, marriage notices and obituaries in newspapers.

The following birth record and 3 newspaper clippings are for the son Louis, born on 09.03.1888 in Appleton, Outagamie, Wisconsin.

The marriage and death records for the son Louis Zogg, born on 09.03.1888 are not available. However, there is a marriage license notice for a Louis C. Zogg and Amanda Kodell published on 11.10.1917 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin - see image below.

There are two obituaries for Louis Zogg, one published on 25.01.1932 in Appleton, Wisconsin, and the other published on 26.01.1932 in Milwaukee - see images below. Fortunately, the obituaries give the name of the widowed wife, Amanda nee Kodel; the names of the children, Audrey, Spencer, Eunice and Ruth; the name of the mother, Mrs. Florian Zogg / Mrs. Bertha Zogg; and the married names of the sisters, Anna Kudart, Lula Moeller, Emily Thompson and Renata Pohlman. The obituary in Milwaukee gives the day and month of death as: 24th of January.

The birth date and place, the names of the father and mother, the names of the wife and children, and the death date (given in these 4 sources), agree with familysearch.

Johann (Josua?) Zogg (* um 1839) wandert 1865 aus

Beitrag von Wolf » Di 29. Jul 2025, 14:05

I found a death record for a Johannes Zogg on 17.05.1842 in Grabs (and if I read it correctly) he is the son of David and Agatha Lippuner - see entry 27 https://dls.staatsarchiv.sg.ch/records/ ... er_page=12. The age at death is 2 years, 3 months, 14 days, which gives a calculated birth date of 03.02.1840. This is the same birth date of Johannes Zogg the son of David and Agatha Lippuner in Grabs - see entry 13 https://dls.staatsarchiv.sg.ch/records/ ... wer_page=7. The Johannes Zogg (listed above) who married Barbara Gantenbein in 1867 has the same date of 03.02.1840 (I assume it is the birth rather than the baptism date) in Grabs.

Thoughts?

I think I found the explanation of why there are two persons named Johannes Zogg with the same parents, one who died in 1842, and the other one who got married in 1867. See https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/pe ... e/KZ18-HKS. The parents had another son born on 22.08.1842 and named him Johannes - see entry 57 https://dls.staatsarchiv.sg.ch/records/ ... er_page=20 .

That is the obvious explanation - nice to have it confirmed!
So the pastor picked the wrong birth date when writing the marriage entry. As far as excluding this Johannes as a possibility for the emigrating Johannes, this is unchanged.
Thank you for checking - Wolf

I found a possible death record (year 1840 in Grabs) for the other Johannes Zogg, baptized on 20.05.1839 in Grabs, the son of the Mstr. Stefan(?) Ulrich Zogg & Rosina Engler - see links below for the possible death record and also a baptismal record for Johannes.

entry 34 https://dls.staatsarchiv.sg.ch/records/ ... er_page=99

entry 59 https://dls.staatsarchiv.sg.ch/records/ ... wer_page=7
The age at death is 1 year, "blank" months, 28? days, which gives a calculated birth date of 21.05.1839. The day of birth in the baptismal record is the 12th and the day of baptism is the 20th, so neither of those are an exact match to a calculated day of birth of the 21st.

In the meantime I have also found a death entry for this Johannes - Grabs 18.06.1840, son of Joh. Ulrich Zogg & Rosina Engler, aged 1 year 28 days ... so we have to find another Johannes (Josua?) born about 1839.

If we assume the age at emigration (26 years) to be inaccurate and extend the range to 1835-1843 for the year of birth, we find a few more Johannes Zogg baptised in Grabs and Buchs - but no Josua.
