28 Messages - | I have found a new reference to Anton Linggi in: Historisches Neujahrsblatt By Verein für Geschichte und Altertümer von Uri on page 17 under title iii Berfonal Berhältnibe. This can be found by going to Google Books. These are scanned images of books. There is a great number of books in all languages. A great number of historical books. You can search for a particular name or place. I have neverr seen it mentioned in this forum. Would there be someone that could translate this for me.
Thank you, Ed Ed, California |

 | Hi Ed - if you hope for a response, you should either give a direct link to the source, or at least mention the issue (year): this year book by now has been issued over 100 times! Wolf Seelentag, St.Gallen |
28 Messages - | Sorry I thought it was just a single book and not a series. The Link: http://books.google.com/books?id=11oSAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA7-PA17&dq=Anton+Linggi,+Switzerland&lr=#v=onepage&q=&f=false
Thank you for your help. Ed Ed, California |

 | Hmmm ... this link brings me to some sort of an index - but nowhere else: how does one get to this page 17 you have mentioned? Wolf Seelentag, St.Gallen |
28 Messages - | Hi Wolf,
Sorry about the problems. I use Firefox and Safari as web browsers. They both go directly to the link on my computer. I am wondering if maybe there are some restrictions on the use of Google Books in Switzerland or Europe itself?
This is the writen text of Historisches Neujahrsblatt By Verein für Geschichte und Altertümer von Uri on page 17:
lll. Personal Verhältnihe.
Ter Pfarrer Joseph Anton Linggi von Brunnen distrilts Schwitz SchuleN'Inspector studierte in Luzern und Sitten in Wallis. Die Jahre seiner Studien 12 Jahre, seines Alters 49.
The bigger question is your access to Google Books for the use of people on this forum. Are you able to access it? Or is there a difference in Europe and USA?
Thank you once again. Ed Ed, California |

 | Hi Ed,
it is not a question of browser but a question of copyright. The latter may be different in Europe an in the USA. That\'s why it is possible that some books on Google-Books are accessible in the USA and not in Europe. Nico |

 | Hi Ed,
I am one of the maintainers of the Niderost family tree you can find in the net. There is only small spare time because of our jobs, so the website does improve very slowly.
Since your first post in this thread (25.08.2006, 02:33:59) I found some additional information in the Passenger Lists from New York (Ellis Island). Generally, it\'s hard to find data from to the old homeland(s) of the emigrants, especially here in Switzerland. Sometimes the names are recorded absolutely wrong and sometimes the emigrants changed their names because of unknown reasons.
As an example, this is the case with Maria Josepha Catharina Nideröst Linggi: In the Passenger List from April, 23 1904, she is recorded as Marie Niederost.
On the same ship there also was her daughter-in-law Marie Dorig and they escorted some of Marie Niderost Linggi\'s nieces and nephews (kids from her brother Franz Michael Niderost, Hopland, CA).
One of my friends is a Linggi. We lost contact twenty years ago but reconnected recently. Maybe his parents are still living and I can meet them in the course of this year.
I will keep you informed.
Hallo Ed,
Markus

28 Messages - | Hi,
I would like to recognize Micheline and Jean-Marie for their help in finding information in France in which Joseph Anton Linggi had a brother, Joseph Michel Linggi. Joseph Michel is married to Charlotte Lea Laigneau. We call this a "genealogy act of kindness". I hope that this translates into the positive way it is intended.
Melchior Linggi comes to America in 1903 and his brother (my grandfather)Bernard Joseph has been here since 1902. His wife and daugher come in 1904. I am in touch with these cousins. Bernard Joseph Linggi lists that he is going to see his Uncle Franz Niderost in the 1902 Ellis Island manifest.
There are also two other families living in California since the 1880's that have the Linggi surname. One is Charles Linggi who is living in San Jose in 1878. He marries a Louisa Caillat. Charles was born in Switzerland 1845. The other Linggi family lives in Sacramento, California. Frank Dominik Linggi first arrived in Philadelphia, Pa and then went into business in New York. He went back to Switzerland and married Mariana Holdener from Isberg, He comes to California, and is in Sacramento for the 1880 census. I do not know if there is any relationship between these two families and my family. I inform you of these two families just in case your friend would be related to them.
I have found that first names were often changed, but the surname was misspelled more often because of misunderstanding or mishearing. I look forward to any information that you can find.
Sincerely,
Ed

 | Hi Ed,
Franz Niderost (senior) was great-grandfather to two of my (very distant) "cousins" in the USA. So, this part of the Niderost and Linggi families is well known to me. Indeed, your great-grandmother (mother to Melchior and Bernardin) was Maria Anna Josepha Catharina Nideröst
In the meantime I asked my friend about his family, but he seems not to be very interested in this subject. It might take a while until I get more information about the relationships.
Yours,
Markus Markus |
